curious to know how many people have actually read The Call of Cthlulhu, who laugh at the meme, or understood at all the South Park Episodes about it
I've always been curious as to the nature of this Cthlulhu thing, wasn't sure if it was a book or what. Is Call of the only one or is there a whole series of books? I might be interested in picking it up to kill some time.
The original story Call of Cthulu is only one of the many that H.P. Lovecraft wrote involving the Mythos. Here is a listing of his bibliography, he wrote a LOT of books and short stories about the Mythos. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._P._Lovecraft_bibliography

He also set it up as sort of an 'open license' where other writers could use the Mythos and such for their own stories, so it has become sort of a grand thing. It's also spawned a number of movies, either adaptions of the stories, or original stories inspired by the Mythos. I recommend To Cast a Deadly Spell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cast_a_Deadly_Spell) as an example of that.

It has also spawned (no pun intended) a number of games about the Mythos universe. The longest running and most famous of which is the roleplaying game Call of Cthulhu.

Actually Lovecraft wrote NOTHING involving the Mythos because the mythos was something cobbled together later by fanboy August Derleith (SP?) Lovecraft actually thought Call of Cthulhu wasn't very good.

Personally I think the mythos has effectively killed any appeal of these characters. Can anyone really say Cthulhu is scary any more? We all know who he is, what he looks like, where he lives, all the mystery is gone. Ditto Hastur, Nyarlahotep, et al

When people see works like this it isn't scary or mysterious, it's just NECRONOMICON OMG I TOTALLY KNOW THAT!

A good lovecraftian work actually stays far away from the established "Mythos" to maximize the actual sense of mystery (See Amnesia: The Dark Descent for a better example, which draws more from "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" than Call of Cthulhu)

OT:
Eventough I have a book with the title "Necronomicon" I am still as sane and uncorrupted as before (well I was uncorrupted before...)
But I would like to have the edition with the leather cover made of human skin...
I like books :)

And yeah, Lovecraft books are not that full of the Cthulhu Mythos but they are still good and creepy in their own subtle way...

Deadpool starts reading the Necronomicon.
Deadpool goes SANE.

Anything's possible, folks!
According to this [http://marvel.wikia.com/Deadpool_%28Wade_Wilson%29], Deadpool's insanity is more of a physical issue than mental one.

Its a bit of a read, but then what isnt.
Many are the powers of the Necronomicon!
Infinite is the power of denial!
