Endless Migration

Endless Migration is an "action mouse avoider" game developed by HotAirRaccoon about the migration of the Canada goose, or rather, the plight of it. You control a Canadian goose leading a flock of fellow geese (or, if you are pretentious and French, swans) across the cities and waters of the world in a never-ending quest to endlessly migrate. Chances are though; you won't last much longer than 3 minutes, at best.

In this game, aircraft constantly fly by all over the place, carelessly striking your flock, and turning them into feathery bloodstains. There is no way to "win"; this is a game of survival, to last as long as possible. Of course, this being a survival game, the difficulty keeps ramping up as more aircraft (like fighter jets, stealth bombers, and UFOs) keep trying to, if albeit unintentionally, kill all your birds. That, combined with the fact this game has clouds, storms, and hurricanes to slow you down, can make this quite a challenge.

There are 29 achievements to collect and 13 upgrades to get as you play the game again and again, giving you and your birds an edge. Although, I can't help but feel the gameplay aspect is not really working with the brilliant scenery. The world is black, white, gray, red, gold, dark, and unforgiving, oppressing you and your birds. Yet, the music gives me the feeling that the birds, living in an oppressive society, still triumph over man's carelessness with sheer tenacity. The gameplay, however, doesn't really work with the evoking imagery. Upgrades are nice, but I doubt that geese actually have pendants of phoenixes and tridents of Poseidon to fight against man with.

However, Endless Migration should be judged by different standards. Yes, the "upgrades" do take away a bit from the brilliant atmosphere, but I think the purpose of Endless Migration is not to entertain, but to inform. To teach us about the plight of migration for birds, and how difficult it is. True, UFOs don't fly in on a regular basis and hit them, but these birds fly cross-country, over oceans, season by season. You can't exactly stop for a breather when you are flying over the Great Lakes, can you?

To get this review back on point, Endless Migration is a good game. It is short, and you probably can get all 29 achievements in 60 minutes, but if those 60 minutes don't make you contemplate and think, then you are officially brain-dead.
