The girl named Anitra Ishmael no longer exists. That is the answer you get, if you ask Anishai about her past. She is reluctant to talk about it insisting one must concentrate on living in the present moment. She has good reasons for this, because her past is full of hard luck and suffering she would like to forget, if only she could.
She was orphaned at a young age, when both her parents got sick and passed away leaving their only child alone in the world. There were no known relatives to take care of her, so the young Anitra was forced to live in the streets of Gradsul. The locals shunned her because of her partly Baklunish heritage, which was clearly visible. She had to beg and steal just to stay alive, because she didn't inherit much more than the clothes she was wearing.
Anitra continued living in poverty and had to struggle daily for survival until one day her life changed. A strange old man wearing a red tunic with a symbol of a dragon saw her stealing food from the marketplace. Anitra was startled and tried to run away, but the old man was surprisingly agile, moving with a speed quite unnatural for someone of his age. He caught her just few blocks away as the weak girl had no chance of escaping.
Instead of turning her to the authorities the man seemed not to be angry at her. He walked her back to the marketplace, asked her to apologize and paid for the food she had stolen. He spoke softly to her and managed to calm the frightened girl. Anitra had not trusted anyone after her parents death, but this man had an aura of kindness and understanding she had never experienced before.
The old man listened to her story and promised her life would change, if she followed him to the monastery where he lived. Anitra was suspicious at first, but she really had no-one else to turn to and finally accepted the offer. They left together and traveled to a distant place somewhere in the mountains surrounding Ket.
The old monk told her this was the Monastery of the Gold Dragon and here she would learn to see the world in a different way. She would learn the traditions of this ancient order and be taught how to defend herself without weapons. But anything she would learn was meant for protecting the weak and aiding the needy. Never was she to use her knowledge and skills for aggression and selfish needs.
Anitra trained long and hard for several years. For the first time she had a clear goal and a meaning of life. Finally her hard work paid off and she was given the same red tunic with the symbol of gold dragon as a token of full membership in the order. She felt like a completely new person, so she took the name Anishai and left the monastery dedicating her life for helping those in need of a new hope.
