What elements do you consider into calling a game a 'cult classic', along with a few examples and why?

I'd say Mashed on the PC, PS2 and Xbox a cult classic, due to the fact it's ironic that many people still play it, but very few have ever heard of it.

The elements for a cult classic are unpredictable.

It just happens.

Darkstalkers.

While an excellent game it came out during the Rein of games like Street Fighter 2 and 3.

Sadly overlooked but, still very popular overseas, and has characters that people recognize but they don't know what game they are from.
(IE: Morrigan, Felecia, Jon Talbain.)

Fahrenheit?

Dunno if that's a cult game.
Considering how ridiculous stupid the game was, and how awesomely well it was executed at the same time, I'd say yes.

I have never facepalmed out of sheer joy more times than with that abomination...lol

I think what makes a game a cult classic is this. It does something new, away from the norm. And it dies is extremely well. But because it's different it does now get the recognition it deserves at first. Later on people look back and say, "this game was freaking awesome".

Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy is one such game. It steps away from most adventure games as just being a point and clicker and actually has you control the character in ways never thought of before.

The Bushido Blade Series is not only a cult classic but an extremely underrated fighting game. None of this life bars and quarter circle special moves crap. Pure swordfighting. Your arm gets cut, you can't use it. Your leg gets cut, you move slowly. And the main attraction to this game is that you can end the fight in one slash of your blade.
