When first came to the Escapist I was very eager to star threads and forums. However, I have been very frustrated to find that my ideas have been done before. I know the search bar is helpful but still. I ask, has this been a dilemma to you too? If so, what are (or were) your ideas.

I thought it was supposed to be infamous for the opposite reason.

I know the feeling as it's happened to me, but I can't remember what they were off the top of my head.

I'm not sure, but I think they fixed that.

Actually no. I've only made one thread and as far as I'm aware it is the only one of its kind. Its not so much a lack of ideas, its more a question of trying (and failing) articulate them. Either that or the thread has been done already - no specifics come to mind - so I don't need to start a new one.

I swear to god there are at least ten or twenty members who exclusively post about how every single thread has been done before and dismissively suggest using the (broken) search bar, regardless of whether or not said thread has indeed be done before.

I had this same problem too when I first joined... I had done a topic about something and found out that what I posted was already made (in different wording) :(

It sucks actually.
It may be dodgy but its still criminally underused.
Sure, but it doesn't help that a lot of times a new member will diligently look up to see if he's doing a repeat thread, find nothing (because it's broken), create said thread, then get harassed by search bar nazis for "not using the search bar".
And a lot of times the threads in question will be months old.

Anyway, no, I've never had this problem.

You should use the search bar. For more general topics

Like if you're thinking about posting about the RRoD then there's a good chance you're thread has been covered. Many times before.

If you're posting about A threesome you may or may not have in the future (Sorry for picking you out) then theres a good chance it hasn't been covered.

The search bar isn't that great.
But if you search different keywords, you'll usually get a result if it's been done before.

It does get annoying when people only post in a thread to say it's been done before.
But threads that have been done to death are more annoying.

I had an idea for a thread, and was thinking about how to phrase it and which poll options I would have, when BOOM!, someone did a thread on that exact subject.
I was not a happy camper that day...

Yeah, I suppose its a no-win situation: don't use the search bar and have the whole site saying "use the search bar" or use the search bar and still have the site saying "use the search bar". It has got better recently but a lot of the time it still has ten pages of irrelevant suggestions.

I think if the topic has been done before but isn't active then it's okay to repost. It takes forever, though.

The search bar is flawed in that it uses your words exactly and the Kraken somehow knows all topics anyway so he'll know if it's been done before (I use him as an example as he most commonly does it). But unless your thread is totally original then you will be torrented with search bar insults.

I think I've made four total. None of them had been done. They were mildly successful, and nobody chimed in with my deja-naziing call.
