After Billie Joe Armstong's fuck-filled rant [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.389095-It-seems-Billie-Joe-Armstrong-doesnt-like-only-having-one-fucking-minute] and also personally, myself watching "The Thick of It" lately, I thought to create this topic about cursing/swearing.

Spoiler: For those unfamiliar with The Thick Of It, or just like to watch people swear here's a small sample

So what is your view on cursing? Is it completely unnecessary? Can be useful/funny/whatever in the right situations? Do you swear all the fucking time?

Well, I'm Scottish, and well, we like a good curse word or four thrown into conversations. But like Fred McAuley says in the video below, it fits the pattern of our voice. But even I hate it when (in real life anyway) people make every second word in their sentence a swear word.

Being a physicist from Glorious Yorkshire, I'm required to swear at least twice in every spoken sentence. Since I now use fuck as a noun, verb, adjective and punctuation, I am required to combine ordinary swearing with fairly innocuous words to highlight the effect. Favourites are

**** biscuit
Shit pickle
Curtains made of bastard
Arsebollocks (doesn't strictly fit the profile, but really good to accentuate certain syllables)

Along with placing fuck in the middle of a regular world

Biofuckingology
Absofuckinglutely
Ballefuckingrina

Thus adding to the effect. Fun times.

I have absolutely no problem with swearing at all. Sometimes a good curse is the only thing that will appropriately express your true feelings towards something at any given moment, not to mention it can also just be really fucking funny.

The only time I have a problem is when certain people swear so often, in such inane circumstances, that the swearing becomes token and toothless. However, that's not a distaste for the words themselves, but a distaste for the person who is diluting the impact that said words can carry.

I save my swears for when I'm really angry. That way, swearing gives me a release that just wouldn't be possible otherwise.

It's a way of expressing both anger and happiness, so why condemn such adaptability?

I swear quite a lot. Wish I didn't but I've developed it and now it's natural. Don't just keep it the same, mix up the languages too. Although people generally still know what I'm saying. At least, here they do.

Well, it depends. With people who swear a lot; anger can often be seen in a lack of swearing.

I try to keep my cussing to just joking around. I tend to cuss A LOT when I'm angry but I'm working on keeping my cool. Cussing is pretty fun though

I do not swear. Ever. Or, I should say, I find myself completely incapable of using the Unforgivable Curse-words. I had them disciplined out of me at an early age, and have not picked them up since. Worst you will hear from me is, "Oh rats. Bloody hell. Christ." and the odd growl. What you may hear me say if you are eavesdropping on a private conversation is the use of a certain word with reference to an activity I perform with my girlfriend. *wink wink nudge nudge*

I have survived high school and a lifetime of online multiplayer gaming without the major curses making their way into my vocabulary.

How I do feel about them? For the most part, I have become desensitized to them. Hearing the odd word or two in conversation does not phase me in the slightest. To those that curse constantly without need or merit I can easily mute or ignore or choose not to associate with. They have their place for the need of immediate emphasis or as an emotional or physical venting system, but other than that, I see them as a waste of breathe and completely unneccesary in normal conversation. Uncultured, if you will.

Oh, and when I say as a venting mechanism, it had better be against an inanimate object or completely unfocused outburst. Verbal abuse is really bad, mmkay?

I usually just say smaller cuss words(crap, hell, ect.) when something bad happens. I save words like shit or fuck for situations that are exeptionally bad. That way I dont need to tell people what happened, they hear me say fuck and they KNOW something bad happened. I never use any swear unless something bad is currently happening though.
