A Mistake

Right now I'm currently looking at Sager Notebook for getting a customizable gaming laptop. Thing is though, I've been told many times it's much smarter (and cheaper) to get the parts yourself and make your own build. Only problem with that is not only do I not know much about building computers, I also can't find any information on building a custom gaming laptop. There's information abound for building desktops, but laptops seem much more complicated to build and the info is sparse. To top it off, laptop building seems to be more expensive. However, a laptop would be much more preferable as I would like to take it between home and school as I can just use it to do all my school work on it much more efficiently than with the school's computers (taking a New Media Production course in college).

Right now I've been eying this laptop: http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.php?page=product_info&model_name=NP8150

Customized with these specs:

Graphics:
- AMD Radeon HD 6990M GPU with 2GB GDDR5 Video Memory

Processor:
- 2nd Generation Intel® Core? i7-2670QM Processor ( 6MB L3 Cache, 2.20GHz)

Ram:
- 12GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz - 3 X 4GB (mainly for video editing, which I'll be doing a lot of in addition to gaming)

HDD:
- 500GB 7200rpm SATA 300 Hard Drive (cheapest option, don't really need a large one)

Optical drive:
- 8X DVD±R/RW/4X +DL Super-Multi Drive & Software (cheapest option, don't need blu-ray)

Also throwing in an IC Diamond Thermal Compound.

Altogether, this build is $1794 (-$100 for an autumn sale, plus $50.07 for shipping = $1744.07).

This is kind of what I got my heart set on at the moment, but if anyone knows where I can find some decent information or even a website for getting the parts for a custom gaming laptop (tried Newegg, couldn't find anything for laptops), well, that would be great, because I honestly feel like I'm going to end up screwing myself over in the long run.
