Bob,

Since you're on the subject of horror, last year I was waiting for your review of Let Me In to come. I was actually looking forward to a comparison between it and its source Let the Right One In.

It never came. Did you ever get around to seeing it? I was a huge fan of LTROI, and am as picky as fanboys get. I avoided LMI, believing I'd hate it, but finally saw it on a whim not too long ago and actually ended up loving it.
Oh so you saw the Original too? I watched it a few years ago after LMI came out but I personally never saw the remake but I have a question about LTROI.

I'm drawing a blank on the names but the little vampire who came to town was supposed to a boy with long hair or was she a girl who didn't consider herself one because she's (undead now) the scar between the legs seems like it was his equipment was cut off but I wasn't sure if it just wasn't saying that's a Vampire side effect re-enforcing they can't reproduce.

So, umm Bob, between "Scream 4" and "The Expendables" which movie do you hate more? :)

That said, decent list of relatively obscure horror films.

I do think your a little too rough on Scream as a series (haven't seen 4 though). It's not that you don't raise valid point, but I thought it was okay, the opening "kill scenes" were generally good works for the genere, and most importantly I think "Scream" probably did a lot to keep horror alive at a time when it was taking an unusually heavy beating.

On some levels it's like "Saw", bashed because it's "hip" to do so right now, and admittedly not a series you can say are really good movies, but they can be rather entertaining if you like that kind of thing to begin with, and just as importantly they ALSO did a lot to prop up the horror genere.

Now granted, you could say something like "Paranormal Activity" was a somewhat better work on a lot of levels, but it fills the same general catagory as the above, by being just "okay" once you really get the idea, and also keeping horror going. All of these film series are works that inspired tons of other work, some of which were superior to the film series itself.

That said, it has been a LONG time since there has been an "OMG, that was great" horror movie in my opinion.

This. C'mon MovieBob! You wouldn't be in with the subtitle-allergic masses, would you?

In answer to your question:

The little vampire, Eli, is a boy (but the character is played by an actress). It isn't touched on in the film, but if you read the original story in the book, Eli, as it turns out, was castrated at an early age by the vampire noble who first bit him. As a pre-pubescent vampire, he's grown his hair out, leading most people to assume he's a little girl. All this is why Eli tells Oskar early on, "I'm not a girl."

So can we say the game "Alone in the Dark" was based on the original movie? Otherwise i'm surprise there wasn't a lawsuit for using the same name.
