It's nice to know that a bunch of guys in a bunker have the ability to stage an unprecedented DDoS attack that has repercussions throughout the internet. Gives you hope for the world.

You may think I'm joking, but really. I think it's good that it takes so few resources to protect freedom of information. Although I don't know exactly what it is that Spamhaus were after. If it's some sort of...well, spam...then there's nothing glorious in defending that.
I think you have your 'god guys' and 'bad guys' mixed up here? Unless I'm just confusing your post.

Spamhaus are an anti-spam group. Cyberbunker is hosting a bunch of spambots. When Spamhaus listed them as a known source of spambots on their public list, Cyberbunker decide to DDoS them, evidently trying to silence or spite them for whatever reason.

Cyberbunker being able to launch such a massive DDoSing (though amusingly still having it not actually work as they wanted) isn't really something to inspire hope O-o, especially when it seems they are the ones trying to deny freedom of information by blocking up Spamhaus' site :X
But wasn't Spamhaus doing essentially the same thing to Cyberbunker first?

From the way this sounds we, the average user, should probably actually be cheering for Cyberbunker, since they were pretty much being targeted for their free information policies, where Spamhaus was trying to put them on a blacklist presumably to try and organize IPs to prevent users from accessing their networks.
I disapprove of what you spam, but I will defend to the death your right to spam it

(Not being sarcastic. A free internet comes at a price, & is clearing your spam folder once in a while really such a high price to pay?)

No, Spamhaus put Cyberbunker on a public blacklist that did nothing but list Cyberbunker as a source of spam. They didn't make any attempts to shut them down, just warn people to avoid it. Cyberbunker responded by trying to shut their entire site down. It's a bit of an escalation.

OT: You've got to give Spamhaus some credit. They're managing to keep their site running even with a giant DDoS attack directed right at them. Considering larger sites have been taken down with attacks less than half the size of this one.

From what I hear/read, all Spamhaus do is make lists of known spammers/phishers/exploit malware sources.
Some companies can then choose to use this list in their own blocking systems to prevent them from receiving said spam/phishing/malware, if they chose to, or indeed in any manner they see fit.
So Spamhaus just gives information. I guess kinda similar to those community blacklists some made for TF2, which others may chose to download if they agree with the blacklisters judgement, and then add to their private block list to avoid those servers.

I mean, even if you're on Cyberbunkers side, and think it's their right to host phishing/malware operations if they want to, it's still pretty clear cut that if you're going to do [X], and then someone puts you on a public list of people doing [X], that trying to then censor this information through a massive DDoS attack really isn't putting you on the pro-freedom-of-information side of the fence. :X
