Cyberpunk fiction is one of nerd cultures favourite genres. Its narratives have been presented in every media format to date, including; books, games, movies, music and animation. It provides a brilliant commentary on the predicted negative effects near-future technologies will have on society as we know it through many fantastic works, but which ones are your favourite?

NOVELS/COMICS ? Neuromancer, William Gibson.

Call me unoriginal, but I?ll maintain I?m just one for the classics. Perhaps the greatest realisation of the future after the effects of technology, and a fascinating read. Anyone who hasn?t read it really should fix that.

MOVIES/ANIMATION ? Blade Runner, Ridley Scott

I?m just one for the classics, I swear! Blade Runner, based on the novel ?Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is one of the greatest exemplars of cinematography and a long time favourite film of mine. As before, a must see.

VIDEO GAMES ? Deus Ex, Eidos

Ok, I get it. I really do pick the obvious ones, whatever. Not only one of the most innovative games of its time, it provides a ridiculous yet enjoyable epic full of grand conspiracies and cybernetics. It?s dated graphically, but it?s one of the best games to date. Go see it, if only for its place in gaming history.

All right, for those of you familiar with Cyberpunk I?ve only brought those which are instantly recognisable, but who cares? They?re my favourite examples of Cyberpunk, and widely known, for a reason. The question is, what are your favourite Cyberpunk tales?

Pretty much the anime Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex. The animation is top notch, the future setting is cool, great cast of characters and the Tachikoma's are adorable!

Mage: The Ascension - TTRPG.
Sorry, but compurergames very rarely get complex enough to touch upon Cyberpunk.

If I had to pick a Computergame, I'd go with Uplink. Uplink is so original that they haven't even come close to remaking anything similar, what so ever. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uplink_(video_game)

William Gibson has great ideas, but I dislike his writing style. However I really liked Idoru and I thought it was better than Neuromancer. Mind you, the ideas in both are brilliant.

Blade Runner is a bit wrecked because of the casting for me, but damn it's pretty, the setting is so well-realised that I can forgive its faults. I'd choose Existenz over it as an interesting and highly relevant exploration of near-future technology though, but I'd also really like to see a Neuromancer film.

Deus Ex is a fantastic game but the story is poo! So cliched and horrid, I'd love to play a similar game that had similar mechanics (especially that game's "three ways to solve every problem" design) but a more down-to-earth plot. I can't think of a really good cyberpunk computer game off the top of my head that also has a worthy story, maybe System Shock 2 is the closest we've gotten (and boy does GladOS remind me of Shodan's daughter) but even that's more sci-fi than cyberpunk to me.

This.

In a sea of terrible, archetype, high pitched anime shows, Ghost in the Shell is a masterpiece.

Also, The Major is fucking awesome.

It is good. What probably makes it good is the fact that it doesn't show the future as being outright dystopian. Flawed, and recovering from a nuclear conflict yes, but future Japan doesn't work in the same way as typical future settings: It does not fall into the typical trap of have a single glaring problem with a very obvious cause (emotions being illegal, fascist government, etc.). I hate the two dimensional sci-fi settings that exist only to support a social crusade of the writer, and I appreciate an attempt to make a more complex society that couldn't be fixed by just ending the police state. I also like how the good guys aren't rebels or guys who see the system as evil. They work for the government! They like their job!
