Well this is exactly what Queensland needed after 75% of the state flooded (that's the size of Germany and France put together) a category 5 cyclone just a bit smaller then cyclone Katrina but with higher wind gusts is just about set to hit Queensland. I'm only going to be hit by the edge of it but if anyone is up higher in northern Queensland I hope you're already evacuated and not reading this! Stay safe!

Edit: I was really just using Katrina as a bit of a reference point to the size of the cyclone instead of just say oh its a category 5 and assuming everyone would know the kind of destruction it can cause, but anyway my entire family lives in central/northern Queensland so I'm just freaking out a little and hoping all my fellow escapist are alright.

Katrina was a hurricane, and people will point out this pedantry. People like me. >_>;

The good thing about hurricanes/cyclones is how slow and predictable they are, following the destruction of the floods in Queensland I doubt as many people are going to take a "wait and see" approach to this storm system.

It is actually larger than Katrina and more powerful, this cyclone is one of the most powerful natural events the Earth can produce (at it's most intense level). Right now I am almost directly in the path of the storm in Cairns, it is predicted to hit in about 13 hours and I will not be surprised if this tourist hot spot is flattened. My family has evacuated to a different suburb, considering any storm surge will be full of bloody deadly box jellyfish. Should be an interesting few days.

Will most likely lose power at some point tonight, it is of course a horrifying event and hopefully people will be safe but at the same time I feel privileged to be able to experience a natural event in such a high magnitude, not many people do. The last cyclone on this scale (in size and power) was in 1890 I heard, and we saw how cyclone Tracy destroyed Darwin (an Aus capital) in the 70s and Innisfail was hit hard by Cyclone Larry. Both were category 4 I believe, and this is a 5 so good luck to everyone who will be riding it out in the far north with me.

Quote I just got off of the BOM website that is being broadcast frequently here:

"THIS IMPACT IS LIKELY TO BE MORE LIFE THREATENING THAN ANY EXPERIENCED DURING RECENT GENERATIONS."

They are the same thing... It is just different terminology.

Christ. Everything in Australia does want to kill you. After trying burning heat for a few generations it seems the dark gods of Australialand are trying another tactic.
I wonder how they will change the wildlife... Everything there already has fangs, claws and poison.
Even the goddamned platypuses(sp?) are dangerous
Fun Fact: My mum once got attacked by a kangaroo for her hotdog.

They are still trying to roast us further south with bushfires and what not.

Good luck people in queensland

Well, it's a different spin anyway.

OT. Fuck me Queensland what did you do? I'm lying low at work because I don't want to be sent to the bushfires, I paid my dues with the Black Saturday fires.

Let me kick off by saying I'm Aussie, and my heart and money have been going out to the Queensland people. To lose everything like that, I can't imagine.

Especially when they thought they were insured, only to find out that they were only insured for "esterial floods" (which means that the water had to come up the river, from the sea0. FUCK YOU INSURANCE COMPANIES!

Now the part I'll probably get hated on for... This disaster could have been mitigated significantly had the dams and reservoirs not been full at the time. For this, I blame the Queensland government. During the recent drought, they saw fit to keep all the water for themselves, telling South Australia, for example, they weren't getting a drop. FUCK YOU PREMIER!

So, now EVERYONE loses bacause of a selfish attitude by a state government. Someone slap 'em for me.
