it's a groom's cake. It's meant to be dedicated to something that the groom enjoys. that's the point.

If he really likes D&D, and especially if he shares that experience with his wife, and his groomsmen and he will be geeking out over it (as I probably would too, depending), then bravo.

ok, I think people are misunderstanding the idea of a groom's cake.

A groom's cake is the ONE thing in a modern wedding that is supposed to be all about the groom.

It's a gift from their family for putting up with all the bullshit that guys have to put up with being the groom.

It isn't going to affect the wedding

it's not setting a theme that the rest of the wedding will have to play to.

It will sit in the corner of the room, next to a probably much larger wedding cake, and it will be focused on D&D, as the groom enjoys it, and he and his friends will have a good laugh about it.

I love the two fighting about the Pac-Man cake. As for me, I support Ultrasnail's vote but will go a bit further with it. My guess is that a few people from your group will be at the wedding, if not all of them. Get the either most fun or most frustrating map you can remember having an instance on and the character's that were there as little marzipan or spun sugar figures.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions but I'm still having trouble. We have a lot of people saying Gelatinous Cube, but that's really jello not cake, and several suggestions of a 20 sided die but I mean look at that dragon. Seems sad to waste someone with that sort of awesome going for him on a polyhedral.

How about two adventureres done like the couple on top of a wedding cake and an ilithid behind a dm screen. Have a couple dice around the place with the 20 on a d20 facing up. Then have written on it "You roll a nat 20 on skill check live happily ever after".

First off, love the idea OP. I've never heard of a grooms cake before but I think its a great idea.

As for my suggestion, how about some kind of battle? A group of adventurers (a 'standard' party) fighting a Dragon or something of that stature.

I wasn't suggesting the whole cake be a gelatinous cube.. I thought maybe something like a group of adventurers fighting a Beholder in a dungeon scene, with a gelatinous cube in the scene, just because I think that would be neato.
