I posted a thread yesterday looking for people to play D&D over IM/Skype/Vent/IRC/Whatever with and I found about 3-4 people.
What I didnt find is a dungeon master..
So basically, im looking for someone to be the dungeon master for some D&D over IM/Skype/Vent/IRC/Whatever

I could theoretically be a DM (I've been one IRL long enough), but I'd at least like some more details before I agree to DMing for some complete strangers...

You might want to try the D&D forums. Being a DM is a lot of work, so I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't find someone right away.

Well, I think that only one of us is experienced, but ive read up enough. They're all escapist members, none of us know eachother personally afaik. Not sure what edition we're going for. I guess we'd just have to get us all into one chat for the information..

I was thinking more in terms of timezones, available days, etc.

Playing with newbies isn't a problem... it'll just allow me to play it fast and loose with the rules like a proper DM, which is a good thing since online games tend to be even slower than irl games and it would suck to get bogged down with rules discussions.

When it comes to the editions, I'd prefer 3.5e myself, since I lack 4e experience and it's been ages since I played the older versions (though I could probably run an AD&D or 3e game with some brushing up). 4e probably wouldn't work anyway without a dedicated program since from what I've seen it's a pretty visual game (you'd need something to represent character position etc), while it's easy to handwave this in 3.5e.

If I may be so bold to make a suggestion: Have you considered a different RPG than D&D? If you've got your mind set on D&D that's cool, but there are RPGs that are better suited to online play than D&D.

I would assume this thread would find a better home in the Forum games and RP board. Just a thought.

Which ones facilitate online play? Coz I can see how D&D might get difficult without voice comms....

And we can run with whatever edition you're most comfortable with
That'd be 3.5e then.

I've got a bit of a headache atm so I'm gonna log off, but tell you what:

If you can get this info from all members and get them to PM it to me, I'll get back to you about whether or not I'll be able/interested to run a game.

- What timezone do you live in? (I'm CET myself)
- What days & timeframes will you be available?
- How long do you want/expect the entire game to last? One session? A couple of weeks? Long-term campaign? Note that personally, I'm not interested in a long-term campaign at this point.

I've got more questions, but those can wait until I've decided whether or not I'm doing this.

Basically, the less complex the rules the better it works online. I've been playing Dark Heresy over IRC for quite some time now and it's a blast, and with the fairly simple D100 roll-under for pretty much everything rules it doesn't slow down to a crawl during combat, which is something I kinda fear would happen with D&D.

You should at least consider something a little easier to do online... also vanilla D&D can be a kinda snore fest - not even Baldurs Gate was straight up D&D!

I have enough online experience as well, but you DO need to make it tempting for us to put that much time and effort into it...

Maybe the people interested should just jump on a ts or vent server and have a chat about it?
