A better idea would be to make an escapist user group for a gamesession, then disband it when you're done.

I don't play myself

It is possible.. but annoying. Use video-conference. If you can really talk and see the people its better. Best thing of course is just to meet and eat pizza together and play REALY.

Its better to use a video conference thing like Summerstorm said, or just a regular voice chat. There are several online DnD programs, such as Battlegrounds RPG which me and a few friends have used before.

Hmm, I think I'd be willing to join you. I've been interested in playing D&D but no one in my area plays.

Sounds like it could work, in theory, but honestly this is something that might take away from the experience. One of the reasons I want to play this game is so I can stay up all night with a bunch of buddies, pizza and soft alcohol galore and some AC/DC humming in the background while we make complete idiots of ourselves. While I've got those parts covered already, nobody is willing to try the D&D part.

I'm willing to bet you could easily do an IM session, but I think I'd have a hard time DMing via IM (personally). I'd be willing to try one sometime though. I play D&D 3.5 edition, so that might make whatever you're planning not work as well.

Seems like it would be too easy to cheat a lil on your dice rolls, plus it can't be nearly as fun as hanging out and playing in person.

Ofcourse not, but I dont know anyone that would play in person
And we just get say the dungeon master or whoever it is to do all the dice rolls
And if noone knows each other
No cheating =)

If the legions grow large enough, can we try conquering a small nation?

Yeah, but it'd probably have to be freeform or something different from the norm.
There are Whitewolf and D&D online sites that basically amount to separated chat rooms for different locations in the game. The DMs and such get "mod accounts" and control everything. Epic scenes or important scenes are usually scheduled ahead of time.Characters have their sheets stored and available to be seen by mod accounts.

It could be done here in a thread, but the game doesn't have built in dice counters, so it'd be freeform, unless you believe everyone will be honest.

I vote Crete.
Isn't Crete technically part of Greece? People who happen to be very experienced in the art of war, a society that produced commanders such as Alexander the Great? O_O

Of course, why else would it be worth conquering! We shall have an entire nation of skilled tacticians, all playing D&D! The battles ... they would be epic.

Oooh true. Ok, Greece it is. After that, Italy! Let us restore the glory of the Roman empire and call it our own! Skilled tacticians and commanders from Greece, skilled and disciplined soldiers from Italy. Now if only we could get some horsemen from Mongolia, no one would be able to stop our cavalry!
