Well. A user group for those of you who play and enjoy recounting some of your greatest adventures in the D&D universe has just opened. Open to all members. Now for the question. Has there EVER been a decent game based on D&D and if so what in god's name is it? All I have seen are sad sad recreations of the once popular tabletop game.
The name of the user group is . . . . Are you ready for this. . . D&D. wow that was hard :p

I would be overjoyed to join!

As for your question, I really liked Neverwinter Nights, but that's just me.

I suppose, in a way, pretty much any RPG game is taking from D&D. This isn't just an opinion based on how the games work, but how the entire principle of the RPG was founded in the first place- as the first narrative games were derived heavily from comic books, manga style artwork and dungeons and dragons. (Referencing the Game Overthinker)
I would say it comes down to what the most wide-open narrative RPG would be, one that delivers coherant course of story and provides the freedom to play any role one desires. The Elder Scrolls are particuarly good at this I believe.

If you get Temple of Elemental Evil with all the mods from Circle of Eight gaming its actually a good functional game with extra stuff included. Plus they have a mod for an old adventure Keep on the Borderlands. Also Dosbox gold box games are pretty accurate version of Ad&D.
