This topic may have been done, already, but I figured I'd give it a go. Basically, I'm asking which of the four romancable party members in Dragon Age 2 do you like the most and why. Myself, I prefer Merrill. I find it's hard to work her into your party, but she's just so adorable and shy.

I liked Fenris. I found that he actually had pretty good reasons for being the way he was. It all made a lot of sense. And it was even better because it's actually due to him that I sided with the Templars in that playthrough. I had this whole adamant stance of pro-mages. And through him and what happened time and time again (like with your mom), I ended up being completely against mages.

Also, I played Awakenings, and due to that, found Anders to be unattractive. I'm also a little confused about the whole psychopath thing. Pretty sure you'd be odd too if you were possessed.
[Close enough to what he is.]

While she's not the character type I usually find myself leaning towards, I actually quite liked the Isabella romance. Her character develops very nicely if you romance her all the way to the end of the game and, of course, she's quite pleasing to look at. She's also fairly easy to fit into most party configurations combat wise so it's not much of an issue keeping her around all the time.

Agreed. I did one run where I romanced her as a male Hawke, and it was so worth it to see the layers of emotional detachment fade away until act 3 "I think I'm falling for you..."

Well, actually, I didn't romance anyone in Dragon Age 2. Merrill was innocent, yes, but I disliked that. I disliked that because it reminded me of, say, Liara's innocence in Mass Effect 1 or Tali's innocence in Mass Effect 2 and quite frankly I was sick of the feeling that I should like her because she was innocent. So that ended that.
This sums it up for me really. Merril just felt like the writers were trying to get the Liara/Tali fans from ME2.

This has been what the 9th Dragon Age 2 topic we've had?

Isabela comes close but I generally dislike them all.

Why? Mainly because these characters are so damn unsubtle. Everything they say and do just keeps bashing us over the head of what they are. The writers did a piss bad job in giving these characters more depth and subtlety

Anders- I'M A GAY MAGE AND HATE TEMPLARS! DEATH TO TEMPLARS!

Isabela - I'M A "WHORE" THAT PRETENDS TO BE A HARDASS BUT HAS A HEART OF GOLD AND I'M FALLING FOR THE CHAMPION!

Merrill - I'M THE CUTE, INNOCENT ELF! LOOK HOW CUTE AND ADORABLE I AM!

Fenris - I'm just emo/brooding.

Honestly, the only good character was Varric and he's not a LI.

Merril as well. Had to work to avoid the others. Especially Anders and Feris. My cousin decided it would be funny to make my guy say something romantic to Anders so after that I had to stay as far away from him as possible. I didn't choose the Guard Captain Character because I found her awkwardness when trying to chat up one of the guards to funny.

My lady Hawk romanced Anders by accident but I stuck with him even after the end while my man hawk went with Isabella as I'd play shiver me timber with her any day of the week.

The problem Bioware games have is that all of the romance options are the same game in game out.
You have;

The Young and Innocent: Merril, and Tali along with a non romance option Mission Vao
The Sexual one: Miranda, Morrigan and Isabella
The Moody one: Jack, Anders, Fenris and Bastilla Shan
The Same sex ones: Not counting DA2 its Zevran, Liliana, Liara.
The Bland one: Carth Onasi, Kaiden Aleko, Ashly Williams ;)
Batman: Garrus

Of course there is some overlap but by and large most Bioware games romanceable NPC's will fit one of these archetypes. I tend to go for the Sexual ones because I like strong women that know what they want so I romanced Morrigan in DA:O, Isabella in DA:2 and Miranda in ME:2.

I romanced Isabella my first play through and it proved to be really rewarding, story-wise. My warrior was a ball of snark, and dueled the Arishok one on one rather than drop a dime on Isabella.

My hard ass mage is romancing Merrill, due largely to the fact that he can't stand Anders, and he likes the idea of corrupting the cute Elf girl.

My female rogue is just miss popular, technically she's in a relationship with Fenris, but all she has to do is bat her eyes and she'd be sleeping with Anders and Merrill too.

Seems like my smart-ass Warrior male Hawke always ends up with Isabella, with one or two Merrill romances tossed in. My female Warrior is with either Isabella or Rival Anders, my male Rouge ended up with Anders, and my female Rouge also ended up with Isabella. I have yet to make a mage yet.

I usually avoid the romances- something in me that is too tight assed to bang a co-worker, even in a fantasy- But I actually did 2 romance playthroughs in this one- my rogue ended up with Fenris, kinda on accident. I didn't agree with his "Mage! Kill it with fire!" approach, but he sounded like Balthier, so I also didn't like pissing him off completely. As a result, When the conversations got heavy, Hawke picked the option that had nothing to do with the current topic. It was sorta like:

Fenris: My soul has been stamped with wretched magic and I am now stained and corrupted for life! Don't you just want to crush the internal organs of every mage you see?

Hawke: You have pretty eyes.

Then I did an Anders romance because, honestly, I wanted to see if I could still
kill him at the end, even if we were banging. It kinda grew on me as it went though, and I have two different end game saves- one where I iced him, and one where I let him live.

Neither Merril nor Izzy held much appeal for me, Even though my only romance in the Mass Effect games is the "innocent" character (Liara). I think someone already said it, but there are just too many sweethearts out there- Liara, Tali, Liliana, etc. I liked Isabella's character, but I think Hawke would've been way too worried about catching whatever that STD was that Anders had to cure.

Although Fenris' romance was not the most profound, I definitely enjoyed his romance the most. His story was very interesting at least.
