Uh.... I am at a distinct lack of words. It's good to supervise your kid's gaming, but why did he beat the kid up for doing poorly? Needs some explanation, methinks. I'm gonna hold my opinion back till more details emerge.
Can't remember the name of the game, but it was an old SNES game, two-players shared the same screen, you were in Japan or something, and you walked around fighting bad guys and stuff. Fairly typical. I remember that you were supposed to "rescue" girls, because they gave you bonus points or health or something like that.

Anyways, when my brothers and I would play it with our dad, he would yell at us every time we accidentally killed one of the girls, because it cost him a "bonus" or whatever.

Not nearly as bad as this poor kid, obviously... but this article just made some bad memories resurface for me. *shudder*

I know someone just like this!
Well, hes my friends dad.
And he gets extremely mad, when they are all the way on the other side of the map, taking a base. When he is yelling help me, help me, and then he dies. My friends then take the post, but then he shuts his x-box off. o.0
Dude has anger issues.
And then whenever I play with them, they accuse me of cheating on Halo 3, when I beat them fair and square. Last time score was.... 50 to 12. 3 of them against me. They got pissy, shut the game off, and left. Later their dad threw dice at them.
Scary guy. Good thing he likes me.

I'm a bit torn on the subject. On one hand people are making quite the fuss out of this assault thing while what he basicly did was spank his son. On the other this is indeed a very stupid thing to punish a kid for. Probably there´s something else at hand that isn´t adressed in this article, because if this was a one-time thing his wife would probably not have filed a restraining order.

[sarcasm] but its the only way the kid will learn [/sarcasm]
Imagine the consequences of his wife leaving the kitchen.

My dad would beat the tar out of me whenever I swung at a 3-0 pitch. What's the difference?
Well... There is no difference. But that doesn't make it right!

Nnnope, don't think you have been.
I understand what you're saying.

But I think it's creepy having someone watch me play games. Or do anything else on the computer/TV.
Ah, you meant active observation. THAT'S creepy. I was talking about inactive observation.

Uhmmmm...
Hmmm...
No comment and no counter-arguement. Oh wait, why would you beat a child for doing badly in something as trivial as a game. It's on the same level as those zeal-blinded sport parents, but a little more insanity mixed in to it.
Oh ho I can't wait to see what Jack Thomson does with this.

Personally I'd let the kid beat him back everytime he dies on "I wanna be the guy"
Now that's cruel and unusual punishment, because the guy would be dead within the hour.

Yeah, it does seem a bit harsh.

Other than mental instability, I can't see a good reason for you to slap your kid around for poor performance in a videogame...what could his justification possibly have been?

Unless, of course, he DOES have a previous record of violence...

I find it odd and upsetting that so many of the people posting here assume that this is only "a little spanking" and that the kid is alright or that aside from the fact that the cause of the "beating" was done because of poor video game performance, that such "discipline" is normal or fine. Now I don't know about Ohio, but here in Minnesota child discipline or "beatings" don't fit the criteria for domestic violence or physical abuse to a child unless the act was intentional and lasts for longer than 24 hours. 24 hours is a pretty long time for a swelling or a bruise to last if it was only through good intentioned discipline.

Now, I was spanked as a child; nothing too bad. Clothes on, pants down, bare-butt, hand only, spoon, paddle, etc. My parents often giving up because their hands were sore or their arms were tired, but none of my punishments earned me a severely swollen butt, let alone one that lasted over 24 hours.

Now, it is possible that this is one of those rare cases of a parent going off the handle and meting out regular discipline for no good reason and then the court systems taking the situation and blowing it out of proportion, but most cases of child abuse or domestic violence are real cases for good reason. Now this guy has been charged with domestic violence, so I don't think it's unnecessary to assume that the act actually fits the criteria for domestic violence. But at the same time, only charged and not convicted.

I mean, disciplining your kid when they don't even do something wrong is pretty messed up and pretty much disgusting if this guy actually was inflicting injury on the child. Child abuse is serious. I'm just surprised by all the responses swinging in mostly one direction.
