How was this result a suprise? Have you not dropped a can of soda before?
I assume the surprise was because of the expectation that it was under so much pressure, and that the tin foil around the can is so thin, that it would just pop. You'll note the plastic sheets they hung around the sides. They did expect a mess. What they didn't expect was for the can to somehow become a squirt gun. Paul probably thought it was going to be a problem because, from his perspective, it could easily look like the miniature jet stream of cola was actually shooting over the plastic sheet hung across from him, thus hitting the couch, electrical equipment, and/or whatever else they set it up to protect in the first place.

At least, that's what it looked like was going on to me.

Diet coke + mentos + drop. please?
Heh. I like your thinking...!!

I've dropped an unopened can of Fanta (I don't like Coke/pepsi/similar, it's vile...!) off a 38' Abseil tower - VERY ACCIDENTALLY!! Made a lovely mess on the floor below though...

Graham and Paul's reactions made me laugh, but now I wonder what they were expecting. Have they never opened a shaken soda before?

Also, that should have been a Pepsi! Now I shall drink a nice crisp and refreshing Coke, in honor of the fallen.
That's exactly what I was going to say. Yes, let us hold a moment of silence for our fallen comrade.

that's pretty much how i expected it to happen. I've seen it before, I've been smashing soda cans against things in my youth.

I could just see the cost of the camera flashing before their eyes.

This is one of my favorites. It was very human.

Ehehhe, a little more than you bargined for eh? Funny that Graham's expletive was bleeped out in the super-slow replay when it would have been barely understandable anyway, but not in the full speeed when it was clearly audiable...

Guys I... wasn't surprised. I've done that before by accident.
It was the spray flying at the computer where I was sitting, off camera, that elicited the "holy shit".

But nobody reads these anyway :(

Eh... Wow. I guess that didn't go as expected.

Still, dropping a can of cola? Do you have any idea of the pressure inside a carbonated drink? It's quite literally a mild explosive if mis-handled. XD

On the other hand, the way this is shot somehow makes me think of product placement. XD.
Yeah, but I don't think that will happen. Companies probably wouldn't like to show everyone how fragile their cheap Chinese shit really is.

I'm glad I know the context of this explanation! :D

And this, my friends, is the story of how LRR lost their deposit on the high speed camera.
I'll admit, I laughed.

I too am wondering at what baseballs would do. Will there be another "Holy shit" from Graham as those balls bounce to him?

Some of us do... We may not go looking for them specifically, but it's always nice to come across a post that explains some of these odd things going on.

Yeah, I know what you mean. But you have to admit, the prominent placement of the logo in this drop had that kind of feel to it.

Still, if the commentary of Back to the Future is any indication, actual paid product placement is a nightmare, and despite those films being full of all kinds of prominent corporate logos (seriously, have a look at the second film in particular. Off the top of my head I can spot Texaco, Pepsi, Pizza hut, and Braun), none of them were paid product placement because that was actually too restrictive.

I read through the thread just to see if there was an explanation like this. Similarly I read through the fish drop one to see something like Paul's response. Learning the behind the scenes bit through reading the forum threads is like listening to the commentary track on a DVD.

I love how the can kept spraying and spraying. :3 And also the reaction, naturally~ =p

Though I must ask: Did anyone else think of Death Note when they saw the soda keep flying out of the can as if it could go on for an eternity? =p
