We're not sure how this is supposed to save energy, but okay!

I thought ths was bad for the environemnt because you let out a small amount of some kinda toxic substance that was let out in filament bulbs so you werent supposed to break these.

I wanna say its mercury, but I'm pretty sure I'm worng if i do

EDIT: after numerous quotes from others I've been told its Mercury. Thank you, but please stop, I'm starting to feel dumb for having an honest question about something i forgot.

The sheer difference in destruction in the first drop, just from a different point of impact, is mindblowing.

Huh, I thought that would turn our differently.
Honestly, I wasn't sure they'd even break.

-Sweet. Some huge christmas decoration tomorrow. Can't wait.-

It's called phosphor and yes it is bad for the environment. That's never stopped me before :D

It is mercury. Not just bad for the environment, bad for anyone in the room with them.

Aren't these things full of gas? It probably stunk so bad after they broke.
Would've been nice if both broke at the same time.

I've always wondered why are those lightbulbs shaped like that.

I've heard of people having to hire professional cleaners experienced in cleaning chemicals to get that shit out of the floor. Hope that's just a suburban myth.

It's funny that one light got away from the first drop. And I agree with everyone else about the gas from those light. I heard that breaking the bulbs will release a type of bad smelling gas. Did anyone wear a mask during the drop?

That's not a suburban myth, you do have to hire professionals to clean mercury. And once the place is clean it's not necessarily safe. There are stories about places being cleaned up and people still losing hair and getting sick from it.

According to wikipedia "Most CFLs contain 3?5 mg per bulb, with the eco-friendly bulbs containing as little as 1 mg." If you eat a kilogram of fish, you'll get about .5 mg of mercury, depending on the fish. So the LRR crew should just hold off on seafood for a while.

Nice drop. The dichotomy on the first drop was great (exactly what I wanted).
I liked the puff of powder at the moment of impact as each one broke.

As for mercury, a CFL (or CFB) contains about 5 mg. Overall, as a one time thing, it's probably nothing to worry about, assuming nobody cut themselves cleaning it up, or was licking the floor around it...

Edit: Beaten the the punch by Billthecrazycat.

There are official clean up directions here - http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hl-vs/iyh-vsv/prod/cfl-afc-eng.php - it isn't that bad. Ventilate the area then clean. But, honestly, unless you're doing it every day it isn't that big of a deal.

Maybe this was answered previously, but what high-speed camera do you use for these shots?

GASP!!! You better call in the hazmat team to clean that up before the breaking of those bulbs causes you guys to get poisoned and die from the TRACE AMOUNTS OF MERCURY INSIDE!! (Which, by the way, you probably eat more mercury from eating all twelve types of fish at a Italian Christmas Eve Dinner then you would from sweeping up the glass from.)

Why are we banning Edison's invention for these ineffective piece of crap light bulbs anyway? Because we save a tiny bit of energy, but only if the light stays on for longer than 15 minutes at a time? Sigh...

Excellent drop today. Alright, a ceramic X-mas tree tomorrow. That's gonna shatter into less pieces than this one but should still look really cool.

Would everyone relax with the cleanup stuff! If they didn't clean it up right they'd be in and out of the hospital already because I'm sure these drops have already been filmed.

Yeah, like everyone is saying, those things contain stuff you shouldn't be exposed to if they break. Hope you guys took precautions, but I didn't see anyone wearing a mask.

The white stuff is phosporescent paint. The gas inside is Mercury.

That was a bad idea LRR!

BRING OUT YOUR DEAD!

Great drop guys, never seen one of these bulbs break before (I just tend to not drop/intentionally break light bulbs of any type) so it was cool to see it! Probably one of the better drops imo.
