It would seem that Rockstar did have a word in the ears of those responsible for this weeks rather disgusting GTA story. Despite the journalists rather lame bleating about how it wasn't anything really, the Star printed an apology and apparently paid Rockstar some compensation. Rockstar rather pleasantly donated the money to charity. The paper says nothing about the fate of the hack who couldn't be bothered to check his facts, but given they lost money over it I can bet he's doing some menial coverage right about now.

The apology in full

ROCKSTAR GAMES - GRAND THEFT AUTO - AN APOLOGY

On 21 July we published an article claiming that the video games company Rockstar Games were planning to release a version of their popular Grand Theft Auto video games series titled ?Grand Theft Auto Rothbury?.

We also published what we claimed would be the cover of this game, solicited comments from a family member impacted by the recent tragedy and criticised Rockstar Games for their alleged plans.

We made no attempt to check the accuracy of the story before publication and did not contact Rockstar Games prior to publishing the story. We also did not question why a best selling and critically acclaimed fictional games series would choose to base one of their most popular games on this horrifying real crime event.

It is now accepted that there were never any plans by Rockstar Games to publish such a game and that the story was false. We apologise for publishing the story using a mock-up of the game cover, our own comments on the matter and soliciting critical comments from a grieving family member.

We unreservedly apologise to Rockstar Games and we have undertaken not to repeat the claims again. We have also agreed to pay them a substantial amount in damages which they are donating to charity.

Like Daily Star cares, they achieved their goal of selling papers via sensationalism, the compensation they paid is just the cost of this method of selling papers. They did it deliberately and they would do it again.

It'll be interesting to see where that apology actually appears in the paper.

As a journalist, this kind of thing makes me sick.
It's the Daily Star, shit like this is basically their MO. He won't get fired.

He probably got a bonus and a pat on the back.

I could always wander up the shops and actually open the evil rag to see where it appears. If, indeed, it does appear in actual print. But regardless the Daily Star will not be happy to have had to post such an apology. Normally such apologies don't contain " We didn't bother researching the story". So yeah I suspect the paper will have done something mean to the reporter in question if only because they lost face.

Is it me or does that "apology" seem like it was written by someone who had a (metaphorical) gun held to their head and a lawyer's finger on the trigger?

I hope the 'journalist' who wrote the article in the first place is either fired, or has that compensation taken right out of his pay cheque.

Ok... so I really didn't see that coming.

Rockstar have gained considerable points in my book for a) making the idiots apologise and b) then donating the settlement to charity.

I fail to see how someone who tarnishes their company's reputation would get a pat on the back. That's just... strange.

Journalists false-reporting for the sake of causing a fuss? Why am I not surprised?

Particularly the Daily Star...

Oh Journalism, give it up already, you've been replaced by the Internet

You assume the Daily Star has a good reputation to tarnish? :)

You need to look up the definition of the word "tabloid"

A pretty meh apology. And honestly, the Star functions in the same way as Fox News. Controversy sells, and that's pretty much the entire business plan. The journo won't even get as much as a slap on the wrist.
