At first I thought that was a real person doing faces for the robot to imitate.

Then it smiled...

Gah! Kill it! Kill it with fire!

The moment it...smiled I cried out in terror. Good gods who thought this was a good idea?!
Seconded, but this was still among the most lifelike I have ever seen.

We're getting there, oh yes, we are.
It was when it stood still, hence why I doubted at first, but such life-like materials aren't exactly new.

Dear god no, Kill it with fire!!!

It is coming for my soul. But on a slightly more serious note it's pretty disturbing on how realistic it looks...
I seem to recall people saying EXACTLY the same thing about photography... & mirrors... & shadows on cave walls...

I'll give you that, but a picture never interacted with anyone, or have a 3 dimensional physical presence, or have the potential to possibly learn and blend in with us... And to kill!!!

But that thing is really creepy in my opinion...

I thought it was going to show the real guy first, and then the robot, but then the it opened it's eyes *shudder*.

While I admire the people who are working on stuff like this, please leave the skin off off the next one. These are getting really creepy.
Trust me, they're actually worse without the skin - http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/107642-Japanese-Engineers-Build-Creepy-Robot-Baby-Head
Put the damn skin back on!
I won't be sleeping well tonight

Movement and Mouth expressions gave it away. However when just moving its eyes and staying still was pretty dead on. This is cool, soon I will be able to have my own sexy Adjutant from SC1 and 2

That is fucking terrifying. I was fine until the massive smile. Then the uncanny valley came roaring into view.

Does nobody give a shit about the uncanny valley when they enter robotics?!

Why are so many roboticists hung up on humanoid robots? I don't want to look at something that I can't tell is a robot. Creating something like that doesn't accomplish anything. I want to know who and what I'm looking at when I look at a machine like this. Why aren't any roboticists interested in making robots that work, robots that play, robots that can respond and interact unless they can spend 5 years perfecting facial motions and creating fake skin and hair?! All the beloved robots of fables and sci-fi stories are ROBOT-LIKE. I'm talking about Johnny Five, Marvin the Paranoid Android, Bender, Wall-E, R2-D2, take your friggin' pick.

Just think of what could be done if they stopped wasting time making them look pretty rather than making them useful.

Aalborg is also becoming the first Geminoid lab outside Japan, representing a long-term commitment to study the way that humans and robots interact.

Just kidding, I actually studied AI and I wish people would stop misusing the term "robot". This thing is just a very real looking motorized doll. I'm not saying it's not a very impressive technological achievement and it definitely is creepy looking, but it has about as much potential to harm you as a ventriloquist dummy.

I'd like to say no, because this is not robotics, but actually I think there are a lot of roboticists that are really intrigued by the idea of having humanlike robots.

It's not really true that creating robots that look like humans accomplishes nothing. I can think of a few "tasks" for robots that might require them to look humanlike. I think that is actually one of the main things that they will be studying with this doll. They want to see how people respond to a "robot" that looks like this (hopefully they will contrast it with reactions to a robotlike "robot").

It is also not true that roboticists aren't interested in making robots that actually work. There are a lot of them that think exactly like you (and me). That it is much more important and interesting what a robot can do than it is how it looks. Apparently, that is not something the media reports on a lot though.
