I was bored the other day and decided to start a new character on Dark Souls. I was then thinking about fun restrictions to put on myself to make the game harder. So I came up with a few rules if anyone wants a bit of a challenge.
The rules:

-Melee classes only
-You have to use your starting equipment for the entire game
-You can upgrade your equipment
-No miracles
-No magic
-No summoning

I've decided to do it as a Thief. That should make the game really entertaining.

Discussion: Would you/are going to try this challenge? Also, restrictions you put on yourself to make a game more challenging. (I'm really curious about the latter.)

As a thief, its going to be more annoying than anything else. Are you allowed summons? That would make alot of fights a little too easy...

Can you buy any items at all (firebomb, etc)?

I've done a few thematic runs in the past. Quelaag is really, really fucking difficult without Maneater Mildred unless you upgrade your knife to +10 or more. Make sure you have a +15 knife for Smough and Orny, because it will drive you nuts how piss poor your damage is with Knife +10 (the fight took me 20+ minutes with bandits +10).

Good luck!

That is a great addition to the rules. No summoning. I chose Thief because of how useless daggers are. I'm going to make use of parrying and backstabbing. Of course bosses will be a pain, but that is all part of the challenge. I'm going to go the elemental route with the Bandit's Knife.
I predict Quelaag, Sif, Orstein/Smough, and the Four Kings are going to be the worst fights to get through.

Derp. OFC you would go elemental... I totally forgot!

Sif is not all that hard, just keep rolling into him and he wont be able to hit the double swing. Quelaag is just a pain because you do so little damage. Orny and Smough - kill Orny first! Four kings will be a *****. There is just no way to kill one fast enough to stop the others spawning, and you have to learn to read when they are going to use magic. Also, remember to roll towards their attack rather than away from.

I also wonder how you will fair in Tomb of Giants, if your not allowed to use the skull... It is almost nightmarish how hard that place is. Protip - run past those giant dogs. They are too hard to kill with a knife, and you can run past them all. You can even run past archerbro and his sneaky homie.

I did suicide runs between bonfires in the Tomb of Giants last time. But doing it blind? That should be interesting. The Four Kings is going to be the real test seeing as how the battle was made to be a DPS match. Fatboy and Slim can be inflicted with Bleed so that makes it a bit easier. Thanks for the tips, though.

I predict Knight and Warrior actually wouldn't be too bad Knight, in particular, as his starting equips actually aren't bad. Thief had the advantage of a high crit damage weapon with bleed. Bandit and Cleric would suck though.

You're mad! MAD I TELL YOU!

OT: I think the game is hard enough as is lol. Though I might, might, (MIGHT) take this when I'm bored and already finish my other two characters. Though I might do a few things different. Though the only thing I will probably change is summoning. Unless I get to piss off at the bosses and do things different. One more thing, Good luck. You are going to need it badly.

No, because it sounds boring.

Try this one:

Simon Belmont
Gift: Master Key (so you can bum rush Blighttown to get the whip).
Items: Throwing Knives, Firebombs (holy water).

Weapons: Whip, Notched Whip. May only upgrade to Fire, Divine, or +15.
Armor: Light only. No headgear, leather only for optimal results. Hard Leather or Wanderer for body, Hard leather Manchette for gloves, and whatever boots you think look best. Black Leather boots are really nice.

Magic: Optimally, nothing. However, it would be acceptable to use a big, one-shot damage spell to simulate Item Crashes. Choose wisely, because you can only have a single attunement slot.

Oooooh, that is a good one. I didn't think about emulations of other video game characters.
