i bought a 360 controller to play the game with but its acting strange. it works fine except for turning sharply, which makes my character start walking slowly or just stop dead. i tried recalibrating the controller but that didnt seem to change anything. it isnt an official microsoft 360 controller (i bought it off ebay, i dont know who made it) so i thought that might be the issue. before i go out and buy another controller though, i just wanted to find out if other people were having issues with their 360 controllers. when you run in circles or turn sharply with your 360 controller, does your character sometimes stop or move more slowly, or does the speed remain consistent?

(this question is obviously just for people who are using a 360 controller)

thank you.

Does it happen on other games too? I don't have Dark Souls yet, so I can't say if it does it on that, but my controller has been fine for everything else (it's an official one).

I've had bad experiences using unofficial controllers on consoles before, often the issue you're describing. It could just be poorly made. If it does it on other games I'm going to say that's probably it but, before you go and buy an official one, you should ask to borrow a friend's just to see if it works any better.

I may be way out of line here... but it's Dark Souls. The game isn't supposed to respond well as far as the controls go. That's the difficulty. It's made to be frustrating as shit. The whole idea is to learn the games flaws and try to play them. That makes your skill, and what not, eh?

Seriously, the shit controls are the appeal for the damn game!
i completely disagree. i have finished dark souls and demons souls on ps3 several times and i always thought the controls were great (except for an occasional lag in dark souls where i would hit an item button or something and then wouldnt actually use it until a couple seconds later). movement certainly has never been an issue for me. with this controller, it is a noticeable issue. not being able to turn properly has never been part of the game

Not really true, it's actually responding pretty well except for 1-2 issues like trying to dodgeroll while getting hit on your shield, then rolling after the block animation is done without being able to stop it.

It just takes some time to get used to the fact that your weapons actually bounce of walls.

The difficulty comes from the movesets of the enemies sicne even low level enemies can have pretty strong combos.

Uh, no. The game is hard because it's hard, not because of the controls. Learning patterns, timing strikes, dodging and blocking incoming attacks, THAT'S what makes Dark Souls difficult, fair and appealing. The controls are tight and responsive, which makes any deaths your fault, not the game's.
Then again, I play on PS3, so maybe the 360 version has problems of its own.

EDIT: What these guys said

It sounds like the behavior of a cheap controller. You can try one of the programs that make non-official 360 conrollers trick programs into thinking that it's a real one. If not, it might be the mechanics of the controller itself. I use a PS3 controller through MotioninJoy (only for PS3) emulating a 360 one and it works great.

I wrote a longer, more detailed post earlier when my internet out and I lost it (literally and figuratively), so forgive me if this is very impersonal.

DONT use 0.7.0000, it is for testing and is pracically alpha. I use 0.6.005 .

Pug the controller in, let windows recognize its own driver, then open DS3 helper (motioninjoy). At top, to the left is "driver Manager". Click that, "check" your controller below, then "load driver" below that. Windows might *****, let it and say it's alright to install this.

Go back to "profiles" at top left. You MUST click "Xbox 360 controller emulator" for it to work with Dark Souls, then pink "enable". If "vibration testing" works you're good to go, and can even exit the program to free up resources.

With SMB, They Bleed Pixels, and console ports, if I unplug the controller to check my PS3, then plug it back in, it will work still. With Dark Souls PC, this is not the case, and you can't alt-tab back to the pink "enable" either. In other words (bayonetta heh heh), if it gets unplugged during play, you must exit (Rememeber "END" is the menu key), and click the pink "enable" again. Obviously this isn't an issue if you don't unplug it all the time, but I figured I'd point out the weird behavior of an otherwise wonderful program that prevented me from dropping 40 bucks on a controller I already had. Oh, and why can't the charge cable work for the 360 controller? It's ridiculous.

*Ahem* Anyway, hopefully that offers some help, and please don't hesitate if you have any questions, as helping is the little I can do. Many people use this fine program to use our PS3 controllers for everything on PC, even PS 1/2 games! It should work for you as well.

I was hoping it would work out for you. No debt, knowing that I made someone's life easier or saved them money is one of the little joys in my life. Enjoy the game, and praise the sun! I'm a Sunbro, so if you want to add Ovenfresh420 as a friend we'll be more likely to see each other's summons.
