So, Steam is beating my wallet blue again...

Anyway, Dark Souls is on sale for $20 right now and I was wondering what condition the PC version is in.

I know there were a number of problems with it on launch (poorly optimized, (supposedly) no widescreen support, etc.). Have any/all of these problems been addressed? Has there been any post release support at all?

If they haven't been addressed, are there any PC players who think the game is still worth playing on the platform?

Thanks in advance for the insight.

The DSFix mod adds adjustable resolutions, gets rid of the framerate cap and tightens up the K+M controls. I believe it also adds additional graphics options now.

Without the mod, the game is still perfectly playable as long as you own an Xinput controller as the keyboard and mouse controls are literally unusable. It's not even that the game doesn't suit K+M, they're just utterly broken.

But if you own a controller, it's more or less identical to the Xbox 360 version. 30FPS cap and an internal resolution of 1024 x 720. The game runs without slowdown, even on my modest rig (which, come to think of it, makes it superior to the 360 version) so as long as you have a relatively new PC it should run well.

I'd recommend it, it's a great game... but only if you have a gamepad.

As far as I tracked it the game received zero patches since it's release on PC, that is official ones.
However the community was very busy indeed and the game now has it's very own mod nexus, as far as I'm aware all technical problems have been solved and then you got all sorts of visual goodies to top it off.

Considering this the game is very well worth a look at, just remember this is an unforgiving dungeon crawler, you will be respawning and grinding the same maps over and over again.

Durante's DSFix helps SUCH an incredible amount, it's incredible, and even allows you to use your own textures. As long as you have that and a USB controller, you'll be set. The resolution is incredible, with the fix, too.

I'd say it's certainly still worth a playthrough. I didn't experience Demon's Souls until it was already out for some time, but I still got to play with plenty of players online and had just as great of a time as anyone else when I was playing alone.

Dark Souls actually just got a new official patch from FROM, but Durante updates his DSFix constantly, constantly adding new features on top of bug fixes.

The internal resolution can be fixed with the DSFix, and looks significantly better than the console version, and can be made even better with user-made textures.

Check out just one of these comparisons:

God damn is that nice.

Buy the game.
Download the mod/unofficial patch.
Enjoy, just don't break any controllers.

But, yes, it's worth getting now as long as you're willing to download a mod to fix a few things...and don't mind getting your balls busted.

The game is impossible without a controller, but with the resolution fix, and a controller, is an amazing experience.

Too late.

One thing about the PC version is that it is possible to save your game anywhere. Since the game practically auto-saves all the time you can quit the game and it will resume where you left off. Then make a copy of the save file. If you die, paste the copy.

It takes some getting used to but can be very helpful.

The game works fine in my eyes. The Fix works well and is pretty easy manipulate to get the settings you need. Even with the fix at work I find the frame rate can be a mixed bag. It's a little jerky at times and the camera control isn't the greatest which means it can be a bit hard to look at sometimes. I play with a gamepad and couldn't see myself using the M&K controls.

The game is a great single player title. It's not as difficult as people make out, although it has quite a steep learning curve that's confounded by a start offering three paths - only one of which is newbie appropriate. Once you get to grip with the mechanics you'll be running up and down those roads with relative ease, barring a scarce few areas and bosses. One particular tag-teaming boss stands out as the high point of the "fair difficulty" that's banded around, and is an example of some of the best enemy Ai in a brawler to date. Secrets are few, but large and rewarding - being comparable in size to what could expect from a small DLC pack. These secrets are extremely difficult to find however, so it'd be my recommendation to read a guide to find the major ones in case you miss out. The lore for the world is interesting and fed subtlety through item descriptions and environments. It's all very open to interpretation and fun to contemplate. The game is let down by a lacklustre character creation system however. It's unbalanced and quite punishing if you make the wrong choices when assigning stats - though there's a nice selection of weapons to play with that offset this.

The multiplayer game is very novel, but ultimately falls short for several reasons. It all revolves around joining covenants, each of which allows the player to interact with others in different ways. These ways are never explained in-game, so the wiki is required reading. The matchmaking system is terrible. You will be put up against other players in end-game gear so often that you will eventually be forced to go offline until you reach NG+, taking a lot away from the roleplaying aspect of the game. Co-Op is let down by the lack of any way to play with friends. The other online elements take the form of ghosts (superfluous) and leaving messages (ultimately annoying).

I give the game my recommendation, but advise not to buy if it's the novel PvP that has caught your interest.

It resumes wherever you left off in the console versions as well. The difference with the PC version is that the DSFix mod will add hard auto-saves every whatever interval you set.

Anyway, yeah, with the DSFix mod and a controller of some description, Dark Souls is pretty damn good on the PC.

Can someone explain the problems with Keyboard+mouse? once i learned the lock-on (was at the burg at that point) everything was smooth sailing, (besides the game hating me)

On topic, i can savely recommend the game as other people mentioned if you use the modzzz, didn't even look at the original product, just modded it immidatly.
