I recently bought Dark Souls, and have been enjoying it quite a bit. However I've noticed something odd.

Currently I am playing on a non live - enabled account. I've never payed for x-box live gold. My brother has a gold account and we've noticed somethiing. He plays online and has received several shards of titanite from random drops(though he hasn't yet found how to use them). I've been playing offline and haven't gotten a single shard.

Are the drop rates affected by being online? Or do I. Just have terrible luck with drops?

No, it doesn't matter if you are online or offline

One way to improve your drop rate is to used humanity, if the thing you want is uncommon, 2 of them will do. Since the humanity effect on drop rate has a diminishing return

It also stack with the gold serpent ring, which you can pick it up at Sens Fortress.

Being online doesn't affect drop rate as far as I know. But the number of humanity you have does increase drop rate I believe.

EDIT: Ninja'd!

Drop rates are not affected by being online, the thing that affects drop rates is how much humanity you have. Also only certain enemies drop titanite. It's possible he's in an area where enemies drop titanite and you aren't.

Neither of us have progressed much more than halfway through the undead parish. That's why I was confused. Guess the random number gods just don't like me. Lol

As others have said, use Humanity. I believe the max number you can get a bonus item discovery is about fourteen or fifteen. It pushes your item find all the way up to 210. Any Humanity after that, and it doesn't do anything.

I believe the place your brother is getting the shards from are the Fencer Knights in the castle. They drop them on occasion. I spent a while there just farming souls, and it wasn't until I visited the Blacksmith (who is literally right down the path) that I realized I had collected quite a few from them. However, once you find the Blacksmith, you can just buy shards from him if you need them that badly.

It is also worth noting that you only need to use it, you can still be hollowed for it to work. As well as the fact that 10 Humanity is the maximum amount you will need to get the best drop rate. Any higher than that will not help your chances, although it does help with other things.
