Hey everyone,

so Dark Souls is on discount on Steam this weekend and I've been interested for quite a while, so I just might buy it.

However... there's this explicit warning that a gamepad controller is highly recommended. And I don't have one, nor do I really want one.

I've been searching around for a bit on exactly how recommended it is and opinions seem to range from completely unplayable, merely very awkward, playable with keyboard only (how would that work?) to just fine.

So what have your experiences been playing Dark Souls with mouse and keyboard? And would you say it's worth just over 25 euros if I don't have a gamepad?

Agreed with Dexter. If you can get a mouse fix, great, but it still controls like shit compared to gamepad.

You can't customize the controls? I'm not even very good with a controller, and I was thinking about trying this game.

Thanks for the tip off, just bought it!

From what I've heard a controller is the only way to go - with the 33% you saved you almost have enough to buy a controller for PC now.

I really don't understand why people are so resistant to owning a controller to PC, their defense is always "I prefer mouse and keyboard".

Well so do I, I wouldn't play Borderlands with my gamepad but Witcher 2 rules with one.

It's best to use the right tool for the job.

First, no matter which method of input you use, DEFINITELY get the DSFix by Durante. It has a billion different improvements that make the game far more playable. Also, texture mods!

This is a place to get texture mods.

Secondly, as others said, controllers are far more convenient. Plus, it will let you play other great games that are just awkward to play using keyboard, like Super Meat Boy. That said, I don't know how playable keyboard+mouse is, sadly.

Definately best to use the right tool for the job as you said. One of the big advantages of PC gaming in my thus far limited experience is flexibility.

If you've never played Dark Souls and want to join in on the great fun, chances are keyboard & mouse will make for a really, really bad experience.

I'm a fervent raving keyboard & mouse cultist of the highest order, but a number of new, modern games really suck horribly right out of the box when you don't use a game pad controller of sorts.

I personally use a wireless Logitech Rumblepad II, as it's more like the PS3 layout I love and crave and want. I find the Xbox/Microsoft controllers to be severely lacking and I really, really hate them. I might re-evaluate them once I grow a third hand in a convenient spot.

There seem to be ways of making the original PS3 game pads work with a Windows PC, but I am not quite up to date there.

I was refusing to play along for years, but Amalur or Darksiders 2 are major furball suckage without a game pad. I think it's repeatedly been discussed properly in, say, the Steam forums.

Dark Souls with a proper game pad controller can grow on you, as every button serves a specific action. Doing it with a keyboard and mouse combo feels like you're trying to forge passports with your trusty old Etch-a-Sketch(R) - not really da bestest of smart ideas.

Please go for an Xbox controller, the game controls like crap with a PS3 controller.

This coming from a guy who owns a PS3 and not an Xbox, for some reason the PC version hates PS3 controllers.
