I was thinking about getting dark souls but I don't know if its worth spending that much money on when there are so many viable free to play titles coming out(path of exile(eventually),fire fall etc.)

so i ask you escapist community if it worth buying dark souls now or just wait till the price drops.

It depends entirely on whether or not you can deal with hard games, because even with the most recent update that has decreased the difficulty. Dark Souls is certainly a... Learning curve. To say the least.

How much does it cost where you can get it?
Personally, I'd say it was worth the £40 I paid for it. However, I'd make sure you have online capabilities before buying it straight away, they really do add to the game.

It's a really fun game if you can go over some of the more frustrating sections of the game. I would say it was my favorite game of the year, and I don't think it's as hard as everyone says it is. Yes, it's challenging, but if you learn from the mistakes you make, you can pretty much overcome any obstacle in the game.

If you miss the era of trial-and-error videogaming where one mistake leads to your death, thus requiring you to remember enemy positions and combat techniques, then Dark Souls is the game for you.

I'd say it depends what kind of gamer you are. The twitchy fingered shooter player would have a hard time adjusting to the pace that is required for the game to be fun. If you can do that though, and immerse yourself it's really great, worth the 40£.

It's an action-RPG with unparalleled combat and tension. Aside from its predecessor there isn't anything else like it on the market right now, so I'd suggest giving it a try.

And remember, there's always the wiki.

Pretty much this. It's a fantastic game all centred on the gameplay. Too often I feel games almost feel lumbered by having to design gameplay instead they'd rather just make a CGI movie.

how essential is the online function. At the moment I don't have access Xbox live gold. Does it need gold or can I just get by on silver membership.

Wait... how can you even begin to compare something closer to a F2P MMO, to a game like Dark souls. Its literally apples to oranges comparison.

Get Dark Souls, pay full price and kindly reward a company that has produced a game beyond compare so as to encourage more games like this to be produced.

As for the online connectivity, Really it adds nothing you cant live without, though its online implentation done correctly.

You have to have Gold to play it.
While it's not essential, getting the extra help, advice, and general PvP sidequest type things that come with it make it a lot more worthwhile.

well, for starters you're gonna want to spend some time offline. At least that's what I did during my first play-through. Online play is a nice touch and addition to the pack of joy'n'death, but it's lack doesn't spoil the game in any way.
I managed to pick it up on eBay for around 30 quid (Special Edition with artwork book and soundtrack CD) about a month ago, so I guess you should be able to find a bargain, too.

Dark Souls is one of my favorite games, so I'd suggest it.

Just make sure you have a large supply of candles/relaxing music/whatever helps you relax, because you're going to need it.
