Hey guys, I've been very interested in Darkfall for a while and recently that interest has been rekindled so I wanted to come to you for two reasons.

First should come the discussion, Have you heard of Darkfall? If so what were your impressions of it? If not, I suggest looking at the game if fantasy settings and role playing games don't bother you.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darkfall

My impression is that it would be amazing for roleplayers, it really seems to focus on realism in a fantasy setting which sounds great and appears to be somewhat skill/tact based. Add to that what I understand to be an incredible amount of crafting options and exploration possibilities and I'm truly interested. The most intriguing for me however is that unlike most RPGs wherein you all run the same quests and they somehow try to make you all feel special, this one actually seems to have you matter. You are a big part of the economy, perhaps an army, you seem to have plenty of options as far as gameplay goes and with the focus on skill it seems you can't 'gimp' your character through bad choices, as the site seems to imply anyway.

Then again I'm a hopeless romantic when it comes to role playing in games, and as I said, its where I find it to have the most potential. I also understand that not everyone here will be partial to roleplaying so I'll leave you to make your own judgments.
Secondly, and I understand many of you will ignore this which is understandable as its just a personal problem and I'm sure I'd be able to reward you with little other than a thank you, but regardless here it is.

I've installed Darkfall on my computer, game doesn't work due to shitty graphics card, no wonder there and I'm sure there's no magic fix short of getting another graphics card. My problem is that my brother's computer, on which I could play ANY other game on highest settings with little problems, it refuses to install Visual Studio C++ 2008 Redistributable which is necessary for Darkfall to operate.

The following error comes up:

Error 1935. An error occurred during the installation assembly 'Microsoft.VC90.ATL,version="9.0.30729.1",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b", processorarchitecture="x86",type="win32". HRESULT: 0x8007054F.

This is when the installation is up to "FT_VC_redist_openMP_x86".

I'm stumped, which isn't a surprise because I'm fairly retarded when it comes to computers, so if anyone can help that'd be grand.

Oh and to add some more, when downloading Visual C++ 2008 off the Microsoft website the install seemed to have finished, when running Darkfall however it would refuse to detect it and thus ask me to install it again etc.

Anyway thanks, the primary focus of this should be the discussion of Darkfall, so please don't feel you have to respond to my SOS to post.

Edit: Playinging is not a word.

Its a great skill based PVP MMO.. one of the better PVP games out there. But you can not go into it alone and need to find a guild/group of friends ASAP or bring them in with you.

I dont know how roleplaying is done in the game, I am sure there are some RP guilds.. I guess your best bet is to get on the darkfall forums and see whats going on and I am sure they will be able to help you with getting the game to run. I really do not think its all that much of a demand with requirements.

It just tells me it doesn't sense a valid graphics card on my computer and I'd update it if I weren't expecting it to crash dead for a couple years now.

What's the community like from your experience? Are they somewhat easy to get along with or am I gonna be getting angry very quickly?

And how about for the odd explorer, I assume if some sort of raid's going on I'll be decimated, but for exploring the land and crafting etc, is it really going to be so bad? Are there any others foolish enough to wonder alone perhaps that I could pry on, etc?

And last question, what was your impression of the player base? How many people were in game and how frequently would you see people around? (technically more than one question, but I'll call em subquestions for the purpose of not editing what I wrote, =])

And thanks for the advice, unfortunately everywhere I've looked the advice seemed to be useless, the Darkfall forums seem to just close every thread with that problem too, so I may just end up reinstalling Windows or buying a new graphics card, neither of which I'm keen on.

If you havent already tried make sure you have the latest video card drivers and direct X updates on your computer.

The community is great.. people will play the enemy and there are guys who play the good guy.. but they all know why they are there and thats for PVP and for fun. You will run into assholes I am sure, but the PVP community is small enough where they do not want to chase people away.

As for exploring and such.. you shoudl be ok since most people seem to log in for events/crafting and not really roam around looking for lone players. Your chances to get attacked will go up as you near peoples cities, they will probably think you are scouting or something. But overall it shouldnt prevent you from playing the game and getting the basics down. Of course the starter areas in PVP games always have people just attacking anything and anyone without thought at times, but it shouldnt really stop you from getting going.

The life if the game from the people I know who are still playing is good. Its a mix of people from all over Euro/North America and has its peaks and dead times like anything else. But, I know they have huge battles on land and at sea.

Here is a pretty cool sea battle..
