I just tryed it, i always get rather exited when games like to go deep with customization, but when i got into it, i kinda had to pause and go wait... i have seen all this before... another game named... spore... then i got it

Generic is a good way of putting it, this just seems like they are are trying to recycle Spore and resell it, like all of the items that you would used to customize your creature were reused and turned into items to add to your monster.

Oh also, Dark spawn

So... is it any good?

I was interested when I heard the initial news. Spore's creature editor with Diablo's gameplay? Sure, that could work.

Then I saw some preview gameplay videos and completely lost interest.

As long as you're not expecting anything revolutionary, it's actually surprisingly solid. Gameplay itself is your typical Hack&Slash stuff, well done but not particularly memorable. Visuals are pretty nice, if not stunning. Soundtrack from what I played was pretty boring actually. And to their credit the developers really seem to be trying to push across some sort of story with mixed results. Still, interesting enough and it's nice to see some effort put into it!

The main selling feature, customizing the creatures, is actually pretty neat too! Basically a complete copy of the SPORE creature editor copied over to this game except now you gather the components for customizing your creatures as diablo-style loot! You start off with a basic archetype and are free to customize them however you like from there depending on what drops and how you want to change things. Pretty entertaining!

Doesn't seem to make any huge difference that I've noticed gameplay-wise although you can switch between characters tag-team style during missions, which is pretty clever, but ultimately it doesn't really change too much... at least not during the early stages. Customization and companion switching might and probably does become more prominent later in the game, I dunno.

Either way it's fun and certainly worth at least downloading the open beta if you're curious. Nothing very new, but what it does it does well! Wouldn't be a day 1 buy for me from what I've played, but if I saw a good deal and had the cash I wouldn't hesitate to pick it up.

Ya I got it too, the game is horrid, I know it's only a beta but my god is it soulless and empty.
Maybe they will swing around for the full game, but I highly doubt it.

Wow, talk about a bit of thread necromancy. Anyway, the beta is up on Steam right now for everyone to play for the next couple of days. I have to admit, I am a bit mixed on the game.

I feel no real attachment to any of the "heroes" when they are all interchangeable. Each hero has three usable abilities, one of which is given to the entire squad, and one passive ability which is shared between other active heroes in multiplayer. With three squads total, thus far, you'll be taking care of a minimum of nine heroes. That is a bit of work when you get down to it. I found myself taking forever after a mission going through and checking armor and weapons on each hero on my active roster.

Something maddening about the item system is that while armor is shared between types of heroes, plasma heroes will be able to use the same armor for example, weapons aren't shared. Granted, this could change later on, I got fed up around level ten which took me about three hours to get to. But, if it doesn't change, it makes it so you need blind, stinking luck to get a weapon you can make use of on your active roster. There was nothing like finding a rare, only to find out that it was for a hero I didn't unlock. Since there isn't a way to trade -- as far as I figured out at least -- I was stuck either unlocking that hero and shifting squads around or selling it in the item shop for DNA which I already had plenty of for my level.

Also, customization is a bit limited. While you can always put extra little doodads onto a hero -- to a degree -- they are always that one hero with the same three moves. Maybe they are trying to make up for this by having one hundred heroes to toy around with. But, it is still the same problem. You will still see the same sets of heroes used time and time again.

While it is nice to see the Spore engine and creation tools made into a game instead of a 3D modeling program. It still feels like they are leaning far too much on the character creator to enthrall players. While this may work for some, those who are looking for Diablo, Torchlight, or Dungeon Siege will not find that level of gameplay here.

It is kind of a shame. I was looking forward to playing it before I played the beta. Maybe I would get it if it was around a fifteen to twenty dollar price point. But, not fifty.

Not picking a fight or anything, just wondering if you knew you can buy weapons. They're pretty cheap if you pawn off all the junk items that wind up in your inventory, and the stats are actually class appropriate, which you would *think* shouldn't be an issue with the weapons being hero-specific.

Yeah, it sucks that the rare weapons are basically the shittiest kind of dice roll, steadily getting worse as you go on, but it's not like you'd be stuck using shit stuff from 10 years ago or anything.
