i was wondering How many People have heard of deaths that made you think 'What?' before anything else.
Wikipedia states the Darwin award is bestowed on a person who "do a service to Humanity by removing themselves from the Gene pool"
id like to hear from the Escapist community, who have you heard of Deserving of this award?
I`ve got a book with so,e of the nominees lying about somewhere i remember one of them was a dude who dies because he put his bed up on an angular roof and fell to his death

I remember thinking that site was funny when I was 16 but then you grow up.

I also feel it cheapens Darwin's name but hey its the internet.

i know someone who got to see the aftermath of one, well saw the second half of it really

here's the story

He didn't think to maybe kick it first? Even if he demonstrated the window strength before without problems, you'd think he would test it before he rammed into it with no chance of stopping himself, I think the title of "best and brightest" was misplaced on that guy.

Natural selection, how I love thee.

My favorite is the guy who cut his own head off to prove his manliness.
This one. I believe it was a polish guy. Some kind of manliness contest, he took a chainsaw to his own neck.

So, what, did he win anyway? Post-humously?

She's not even stupid, these people are morbid.
they're not all supposed to be funny or show stupidity, just about people who remove themselves from the gene pool, it's just a bonus that said self-removal from the gene pool is often really really funny and it assures us that natural selection is still working.

this one for example [http://darwinawards.com/darwin/darwin1997-02.html]

Let's see:

-There were 2 kids in Vietnam playing frisbee with a land mine when it exploded

-A group of soldiers (don't remember country) were smoking in an ammo depot, and it exploded

-A bunch of teenagers were dancing around atop one of those large stationary gas tanks (think the big rig ones, only without a tractor), and it exploded

-A man, while very very drunk, put his testicles in a golf-ball washing machine.

-A couple hillbillies blew out a fuse on their truck and replaced it with a .22 rifle shell.

-A woman was stranded out in a blizzard, some few miles from civilization. She got out of her car and started to hoof it. Authorities found her dead a day or two later. Back at the car, authorities discovered a couple of blankets and various other survival gear.

I don't find these at all funny. These people died, and it's unfair to judge their intelligence based off one (sadly fatal) mistake.
It is always fair to judge someone's intelligence when they do something as spectacularly stupid as the vast majority of the Darwin Awards. Some of them are from simply not thinking/circumstance, and for those, I agree. Those people are just really unlucky. The remainder, however, are just plain stupid.

I think my favourite is either this [http://www.darwinawards.com/darwin/darwin1993-10.html], or the one about the guy that tried to play russian roulette with an automatic pistol and volunteered to take the first shot.
very educational

1) Never put your gun next to your phone

2) If your going to engage in a game that is renowned for being lethally dangerous, it's probably a good idea to research the rules.

The women had a son, so she didn't remove herself from the genepool.

I for one, believe that compitence and common sense are nurture not nature.
You're right there. Common sense comes directly from people being taught to think. However, the people who don't teach their children common sense are almost universally those without. Thus, if we allow those without common sense to remove themselves from society, eventually we will run out of people without common sense.

of course they are, but she was the architect of her own death, which qualifies one for a darwin award.

^^^^^ Agayek explains the purpose better.

ok she IS stupid for several reasons

1. she let her 10 year old kid drive the car
2. she could have easily done it correctly herself
3. she walked behind a car while it was moving

Not as good as the people who played Russian Roulette with...an unexploded mine.
