Data Execution Prevention

I'll give you a brief summary:

Data Execution Prevention is crashing Jedi Academy Multiplayer (referred to as JKA from here on in) whenever I try and launch it. I have selected this as a program for it to ignore and even gone into command prompt and disabled it myself (bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx OptIn while in the system32 directory in Administrator Command Prompt), but DEP is still working and still crashing JKA rather than letting it run. My issue is that I (theoretically) have disabled DEP completely, but it's still running and, irritatingly, still crashing my JKA client.

So I turn to you, Escapist users. Please help.

I am, sadly, running Vista.

I just love the Escapist's tolerance of technical support threads. We need a section for this. Every time I've asked on this forum for some help, it's always been ignored.

I had this same issue with Kotor. Sorry, I don't remember exactly how I fixed it. Try running it in compatibility for XP SP2. That might have been how i got it to work. I got the same problem with Kotor 2 and never got it to work.

Also, don't complain about being ignored 20 minutes after you post a thread. For future reference, when you have a tech/software issue, I recommend posting in the IGN forums as well, they can be really helpful.

I agree completely with this. We need two more forums: one for game help, one for technical support.
(Partly to make that badge for posting in 10 different forums vaguely achievable)

OT: Is it an issue inherent with Vista? Ie have you tried it with other games?
I can't recommend much but you could try booting up Safe Mode and disabling it that way, or running JKA through Safe Mode... I don't know, honestly.

It's not just this thread I'm complaining about: I've posted threads before that have literally gotten 0 replies many times on the subject of technical things or support.

a) it might just be possible that people don't know how to help and thus stay silent.

b) Are you sure it is the DEP, and not something else? Can you, for example, play the single player just fine?

a) Everybody can chip in with some sort of suggestion as most know how Google works and even if I've already tried it, the thread will still be bumped

b) It says that DEP is closing the program.

a) most people assume the person asking for help has already googled the problem.

b) By any chance, do you have an ati video card? more recent than 10.4 Catalyst drivers are known to cause all sorts of funky problems with JKA; I myself wrestled not a month ago with JKA and a crash problem in Win7.

And have you checked if the the JKA is on the DEP exceptions list, under System, Advanced System Settings? Or disabled DEP directly from there and rebooted the comp to be sure?

If you don't have a Radeon card, and have checked the exceptions and rebooted before trying to launch, then I can't help any further.

I remember the system32 folder kept on opening itself on my old computer at exactly midnight every night. I never figured out what it was for or why it opened all the time, but it creeped me out.

The exceptions list doesn't work at all and you can't disable it from there. The only way to disable it is to use command prompt (which I have done), but it still does it. I'm going to reinstall JKA. Thanks for trying to help anyway.

You want people to Google problems for you? You'll get a faster response on that by talking to your wife, having a kid, raising it to be tech savvy and then asking them to Google it for you. And even then they'll likely tell you to piss off and Google it yourself :p

And yeah, really, complaining about no replies on a tech question after a glorious half an hour or so is really silly, if you assume a non-tech thread takes 5 minutes to get a first response, you're expecting one in 6 Escapists has the solution to your problem... also this is not a tech support forum/site so little room for complaints in the first place :p

Not replying to be a jerk though so consider this a...

Waitasecond, the list doesn't work!?

Why then are you assuming this is a problem with JKA, and not with the DEP? Are you sure there are no viruses in your comp, messing with the DEP? Or taht the files have not been corrupted or something?

I would try to somehow reinstall the DEP portion of your Vista, or try to find a solution from Microsoft.

I'm not assuming this is a problem with JKA. I called the title "Data Execution Prevention" for a reason. I just mentioned JKA because that's the game I'm having the issue with.

I'm not asking people to Google it for me, that being the second part of the sentence, if you'd bother to actually analyse in any kind of depth what I posted. As for the second part of your post, I've already replied to that, so I'm just going to repeat it again:

"It's not just this thread I'm complaining about: I've posted threads before that have literally gotten 0 replies many times on the subject of technical things or support."

It's a recurring problem. And I bet nobody would have posted in this thread if I hadn't given it that bump by complaining about it not getting any replies.

I would have, as soon as I came upon it. I just saw your second post, the one you posted almost immediately after your first one, worthy of commenting in addition to your OP.

now, I would actually do a full problem analysis for the DEP if I were you. See from Microsoft if it can be easily reinstalled or repaired, or the files replaced etc. If some of the functionality via the System-menu is missing, there is no saying if your command line prompts even registered on the module.

Have you noticed any problems with other programs besides JKA? Does the JKA single player work, or not? Have you previously modified the DEP in any way? Have you messed in the system registry, with a possibility of perhaps by mistake altering something critical?

Also, do you have an ATI video card? There are known problems with some of the Catalyst Drivers, causing a variety of crashes and errors with JKA (due to its graphics engine and way to handle 3D)

I think your problem there is that you assume a bunch of people on the internet are waiting fervently to solve any problem you have as soon as you post it.

Try asking on the games support forum if you want that service, if not be happy when someone has the time to answer you.

Also as far as I knew the Escapist wasn't created as a tech support forum...

To all of your questions apart from the last one, no.

I have an ATI video card, yes, but I've been able to run JKA fine until recently whereby it would crash and then it would tell me that DEP had closed it as a security risk.

Oh, I actually try and look for these, I know how infuriating this kind of crap is and I like helping.

You've turned it off under performance options and I assume you're the admin account?

Try right clicking on the .exe and see if there's a box that allows it to be run as a program. That's a common UNIX security feature and it's possible Windows borrowed it. I'm thinking that'd auto-apply when DEP is on and not disable when it's turned off.
I can't turn it off under performance options (I already disabled it via command prompt and it's greyed out) and I can't find the exe for the DEP.

I think your problem is that you don't understand that if someone has used a website for a fairly long time and considers it a trusted source of information and that it also has intelligent members they'll consult it first before going to the trouble of creating an account on an entirely different site. Also, I have already explained to two other people that the reason I was complaining about the general tolerance levels of tech support threads on this site is because I've seen tech support threads sink, some mine, a lot of the time.
