Virgil,
I hear you, not my style at all was merely being polite in response to the suggestion.
Oh and Madman bomb threats ARE NOT effective, they are counterproductive and dangerous, and lead to the government rolling our civil liberties back 60 years.

With a bit of thought, what i think we really need is some kind of way to get the executive of the biggest ISPs to recognize that allowing, nay encouraging the use of data is good for their companies and to price it accordingly.

Anyways, there's nothing that can really be done in Australia. We need that fibre-optic infrastructure Rudd promised us, but he has axed the plan. Unfortunately, we're still in the dark because of this.
There already is a Fibre-optic network in Canberra and well it needs to go broke atleast one more time before it will be a competitive option.

Just to give you an Idea: http://www.transact.com.au
built by the local Gov and a corporate, Sold the network off for a loss.
Bought by a corporate, and they started going broke so the network was sold off again (from memory it's only been twice so far, could be more).
Now owned by the local Elec & gas company, still the most expensive way to get BB.

The Cost of drilling under all the roads in Canberra and the Km's of fibre meant that is cost millions! and well Canberra dose not have the population density to make the network profitable. They use VDSL for the last 50m over twisted copper pair.

I could see the point of doing it around a heavily high rise residential area, where you could cover 100,000 of units/customers in a block or too, but other wise there are better & cheaper Technology's that will get you connected.

Also Realistically in Au the "last mile" is not the bottle neck.

enjoy
