my friend keeps beating me at it and i just can't seem to make any headway. i'm not the best at rts but he keeps insisting on me playing and i'm getting tired of losing. wondered if there's any strategies or tips people could give me that might give me a chance at beating him?

Preemptive strikes. Find his base, set a rally point, and set your basic unit to auto-train (right click). As long as he has to work to keep out you units, he can't really get at your base. Depending on what race he is, Chaos, Tau or Imperial Guard work best for this.

Play on his team and learn some tricks? When it comes to Dawn of War it's mostly down to the difficulty you play and who gets the bigger guns first.

And please tell me you upgrade and reinforce your units?

that does sound like a plan, and i do like the chaos marines so that'd be good if i can get it to work!

Yeah, I would also suggest keeping maybe two or so squads left for strategic point capturing. Then you can just keep getting requisition and there won't be any significant losses. Come to think of it, you could set them to auto reinforce when they get trained...

Space MArines need time to set up a proper offense/defense. I'd go orks and zerg him as soon as possible, prefferably with some wartraks.

You gotta rush your ass off. Personally I like the Necrons because they don't use REQ only power so you just build as many generators as you can and you have unlimited resources. Bottlenecks are super important, when the game starts try to find the maps bottlenecks and send your first squads/builders there. Build up mines and turrets and then once those places are secure start capping all the spots left on your side and they shouldn't need any defense.

With Space Marines you just upgrade your basic units with heavy bolters and rocket launchers and keep attacking. Keep developing in the meantime and once you have Rhinoes then send those against him.

They have 100 population, but each ork cost at least 1 population. that means it doesn't matter if you reinforce, or just get a bunch of squads.

Well get faster then. Try some different races. Usually what I do is send off some scouts/whatever for some req. points and get a few units for flesh. Grab some turrets, build up some guys and make them the crème de la crème before setting off in a tactical fashion. As in, not walking into a base full of turrets and bombarding from afar when possible. As Space Marines, anyway. I prefer the Necrons.

That all works well, but Necrons? That's just cruel... Have you seen how much health the Necron Warriors have? I can't win against any person or AI that knows what they're doing when they play Necrons.

It's good not to rely on static defenses ala turrets and blobbed infantry. Keep your units mobile and split up in smaller groups but close enough to respond to any threats. If possible keep a large section of troops out of his sight and use them for a counter attack when he underestimates your forces. Have some jump units around to quickly respond to indirect fire.

...Or just play tau and make a firing line of epic proportions...
