But if it was stand alone you'd happily pay 30 bucks for the same game?

What if it goes standalone and there are no more servers running the Mod version? Then you'd have to pay AGAIN.

Personally, I'm really jonesing for this game but am holding for a sale. Primarily because there's a good chance my PC won't be able to do it justice. I play Arma 2 Free occasionally and if there are more than 8 people on a server it gets super laggy. Might be the servers though.

In the meantime I've been getting my survival fix by playing Call of Pripyat, which I finally got to run at a decent fps without CTDing every 10 min.

I.e. expect to get shot many many many times while being flamed and told that while they desecrate your corpse in game they are also currently having sexual intercourse with you mother.

There are actually very few ways to communicate in game reliably anymore. And none to talk to somebody you recently killed.
