I've decided to make the jump into an mmorpg but I'm not sure what one.
WOW doesn't really appeal to me partly because of the subscription but more so because I feel like it's too late for me to get in to it properly since it's been out for so many years.
So I've decided to try out DDO, but am I wasting my time? Is there better out there?

Problem with a lot of these non-subscription mmos is that they often have their hands out for "premium" content at every turn, so it feels like the game has cheat codes for sale (Lord of the rings online is notorious for it), a long side making people pay for classes, areas, quests etc.

This model appeals to many people (mainly the poor student demographic) but I personally prefer paying my $20 a month and having all the content available.

tl;dr Free to play games sell "power" and access to those with cash, subscription ones tend not to, but also don't offer shortcuts.

I'd say its one of the best free options available.

I wouldn't really call it an MMO as such, seems more of a multiplayer dungeon crawler. As its own genre I think it works well. I havent played it a lot prefering subscription based online games myself but at least in the start the free content is well worth the time.

I think it's pretty fun. It's different enough than the other MMOs out there that it's kept me playing for years just because they don't have a AAA competitor with non-WoW/EQ style combat. Character customization through multi-classing is pretty deep and offers loads of replay value if you enjoy alts. They do offer a subscription option payment-wise, but if you're going to be playing for very long at all, ala carte (microtransactions) is the way to go because when you buy an account option (race, class, quests etc.) it's open on all servers for as long as you choose to play the game. Makes it really easy to come and go with the game without feeling like you're wasting dollars not playing every day like some folks do with subscriptions.

The way the gameplay goes, I wouldn't have called it "Dungeons and Dragons" if I didn't already know. I had a little bit of fun until I ran into the most bullshitty level I've played since the Water Temple. You have to run to the end of the dungeon, nick some shiny piece of shit, then fight your way out. But until you get to the shiny thing, you can't kill more than 6 of a certain enemy, which is what the enemy happens to be 1/4 of the time, out of easily 100 motherfuckers. So you can't kill anything because you can't separate priority targets in the middle of a clusterfuck, at least not with a fighter.

Anyway, my friends like it, so whatever.
