Soooooooo, finally i got my copy of Dead Island.
Intro, options, asian chick, onwards to victory !

Let's roleplay a bit.

...no, wait.

Awaken my child, awaken and embrace your fate !

There's a dead couple on the floor next door. Okkkkkkk, something is not quite right here. There's pretty decent axe between them, however i know that i shouldn't touch possible murder weapons. Let's go, find out what's happening.

Silence. Strange, but that's understable - there's crime scene. Barricades. Even more strange.

Suggestion overhead : i should search for useful items. Why ? I don't get it. There are bodies, alright, but f*ck me, what has it do do with thievery ? Why should i steal ?
I can't budge barricades. Surely that's their purpose, but come on, they aren't made from stone. Ok. Let's take a shortcut. Reception, sand, sky, let's go there.

Scream. Asian chick's reaction : none. Deaf ? No hablas screamese ?

People falling down. Ummmmmm, shit...

Better go back and take that axe. Ummmmm... I can't ? Why ? Is it glued to the floor or something ? Nevermind. Let's go back. Time for little climbing. Just because i don't think it's safe around here and i want to see how high it is to the ground.

Uhhhhhhh, i can't go over balustrade. Why ? Maybe it's too high... Let's do it Minecraft style and build some platform from suitcases and valises.

...I can't. They are unmovable.

My face : NOPE.
Am i missing something or really this game is just like that ?

P.S.
Did somebody said "it's wrong to sell used games" ?

Not every game has to be Deus Ex, Dead Island is scripted, so is Call of Duty. I don't see you complaining about that.
Sure, the looting of every suitcase isn't quite logical in that situation, but it's just a tutorial. It's teaching you how to play the game and if it needs to take some liberty in it's roleplaying logic, then that's fine. I'd rather that than it not tell me how to do something.

if you don't want to steal, you're boned.
and the axe is a reference to the trailer.
also, yes the balcony is too high.
and you don't have to be able to move everything. wouldn't make sense.

No, that's pretty much Dead Island. I hope that you have friends that have it, because it's a pretty boring 40+ hours of gameplay if you don't.

One thing that Dead Island does really well though, despite the scenery and such, is convey a sense of total and utter loneliness. When you're out there doing missions, even though logically you know that there are people back at base, or the occasional survivor you run into...you feel so alone. At least, I know I did. I had friends to play with, and as far as the story goes, it was OK. They explain the zombies, but you need to be paying close attention, or you'll miss it, and they build up this epic climax, but it never really happens.

All in all, it depends on what you're expecting from it. If you just expect a zombie killing game, then it's great. It's not much else though. The only real roleplaying elements are what skill tree you decide to use. If you've played Borderlands, you're already familiar with how Dead Island is going to work as far as story and gameplay work. The story is there, and the gameplay isn't bad, but you'd better listen to every audio log, and talk to everyone if you want a story that makes even a little bit of sense.

Urgh, I thought it fairly obvious that I didn't specifically mean Call of Duty. In which case I am forced to assume that you have never played any other video game before and have only ever played Tabletop RPG's. In which case, might I suggest you learn the ropes of video gaming before complaining about the limitations?

No, the intro sequence is not remotely like the rest of the game.

If you want to get an idea of what the game is like, play until you get to explore the map.

Don't set your expectations too high though. Just sayin'.

DAMMIT ! Too bad that no trailer mentioned it. After watching a few, I expected DI to have a little more interactive environment. My bad.

Please, by all means, force yourself and assume whatever you want and act accordingly if that makes you happy. :)

Thanks, but life's too short to waste on things that are easy to replace with better alternatives i guess. :)
