Also, the actions of a government should never be held against it's people.
The world does this to the US, but when something catastrophic happens, they're whistling an entirely different tune. Well, until they get the help they need.

Alright, now something bugs me a little, and I have to get it off my chest.

Why is the Third Reich/Nazi Germany/Hitler pulled into this stuff every damn time?

Look guys, we have assholes in charge of this. They censor shit. And it sucks. And it has shit all to do with nazi Germany. Seriously, this isnt related in the slightest.

I really dont get it. Maybe I should start making elaborate posts about the Vietnam war every time an American politician calls for video game censorship.
I think that censorship laws actually did have something to do with the end of WWII.

Not exactly, or at least not with me. I think that most Americans are decent, kind people, but often when I look at the U.S. Government (or any other Government in a clearly democratic country for that matter) I think "who voted for those people?"

Eh. What can you even say these days?
I'd ignore it completely, but it does make me curious if I own any games that would be banned in their current form in Germany.
Not a completely pointless question, because I have some ideas going (mostly related to trains) that would require moving to Germany...
But anyway... These kind of issues happen. I mean, isn't this whole skyrim business swamping the forums right now closely related to censorship issues?
As far as i know (I am German) Skyrim isn't censored. One good thing about skyrim is that it's just for people as old or older than 16. Oblivion was for people as old or older than 12.
Censorship in germany is really bad, but not that bad how people depict it.
As far as i know you could and can allways import a game without problems (That's why this article was kinda strange because it stated that that would be illegal).
One game that i also censored in germany is manhunt, but can you blame them for this?
On the other hand both Dead Space games are not censored, because the Necromorph don't look too much like humans.
So in general i think you should be safe.
No, I meant that there's a huge argument going about the fact that you can't kill children in Skyrim.
And this is closely related to ideas about censorship and what is, or is not appropriate content for a game.

I didn't mean to say that Germany (or any other country) had censored Skyrim. (Though I suspect it's design is influenced by various censorship issues.)

*pulls out his "List of countries I'd consider moving to"*
*crosses out Germany*

Seriously, that's just fucking ridiculous (and note, it's as ridiculous in principle as it is pragmatically, so my view stands for more than just as a gamer)

I'm pretty sure you can still import the game.

The only reason to ban the import of a game to Germany is the use of swastikas in that game. (You can't import the english version of COD: Black Ops because there are swastikas in Nazi zombie mode. Even if you get hold of an english version, you can't activate it on Steam if you have a German IP address.)

Once we deal with Australia I say we turn our sights to Germany and start pestering them to unclench their sphincter a bit. WWII was a long time ago, Germany, you can chill out and join the rest of us in our violence filled entertainment. We won't judge, honest.
To be fair, if you were known in large part for the atrocities committed in a world war, you might be quick to distance yourself from it, too.

Germany has it worse than us. We can still play the majority of games they just get watered down a bit, which does not detract from the core of the gameplay. Outright banning isn't good...

Trying really hard to not have a humorous swipe at Germany right now :p (Aussie humour is not usually understood by other cultures)

Fix Germany, Australia will sort itself out in its own time :D

There seems to be a lot of ignorance in this thread. As far as if German's hope the Nazis win: You don't watch movie about native americans getting killed and then when they fight back say to yourself, "I sure do hope these idiotic, inbred useless backwoods illiterate hicks turn this around and win".
Well that is so far removed from recent memory, but with WWII it is very likely you know/knew a veteran. Maybe even someone close to you, like a grandfather.

PS. Aren't the natives the backwoods illterate ones in that scenario? I'm not supporting the way the were treated, just seems like an odd insult given the circumstances.

Actually I was thinking exactly that when I watched Avatar.

They're seizing all copies? Every single one they find, no matter what?

Oh, well from where I'm standing it doesn't look like a whole lot's changed since 1940. Maybe a few more American steakhouses sprinkled around Hamburg and a bit of a dress code change, but not much!

OT: Arent they generally banned before thye are released? Or hasnt i been released there at all yet?
Its been out for months now, seen it in a local gamestop.
And you're not German so I am guessing you haven't stopped by any German GameStops.
I'm Currently living in germany working for Bluebyte/Ubisoft for the last 8 months, been in plenty of German Gamestops... saying that on my way to work this morning, i found yes indeed it isnt being sold in gamestops, but was a local Import store i walk by to work in the morning, so i was a bit mistaken on my part.

Luckily i live in austria, so i get pretty much everything uncensored, unless a publisher was lazy and just sends us germany-copies. Even then you can easily get uncensored versions over steam. Only our anti-Nazi laws are similary strict.

Aaah, I understand. In that case I wonder if that import store will keep selling it after the ban and if anyone will care... Sorry for my assumption.

Dead Island has been banned in Germany and both the developer and the publisher have reacted with a yawn.
Hmmmmmmm...
1. "Dark city" syndrome. It's "Skyrim"'s 5 minutes of glory and pretty much every other game (with the exception of some most massive titles) are doomed.
2. "Dead Island" weren't that good. I strongly suspect that people won't remember it 5 years since now.
