In celebration of the fact that Ayane from DoA is going to be win Warriors Orochi 3 (which I intend to pick up tomorrow), I felt I'd make a topic for perhaps my favorite fighting series ever: Dead or Alive.

Now while - to my knowledge - the DoA series is the only fighting series that has more female character, I'll say right now that the...ummm...."jiggle-factor" isn't the reason I love these games so much. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't part of it, but in truth I love the simplicity of it. There's no massive combos that make you feel like a downy if you're playing someone who pulls off a single string of moves that you can do nothing about and leaves you with one quarter of your life left. There's not many super ultra power moves with button combinations that require both hands have an extra thumb. No, it all boils down into essentially being a game of rock-paper-scissors. Punch beats Throw. Throw beats Counter. Counter beats Punch. Once you've learned this the game is pretty easy to get the hang of. And it's that simplicity that I really enjoy: essentially anyone can pick up the game and immediately start to get the hang of it.

Favorite Characters:
Male: Jann Lee. I love his moves, his speed, his power, and of course the sounds he makes. I can kick vast assortments of ass with this guy.
Female: Kasumi. So nimble and quick, in the right hands she exemplifies the phrase "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee."

And now for a question: anyone have any news from the world of DoA? Any new DoA games coming out? I had heard something about a couple new games, one might have been canceled, one's only for hand-held devices, one might be a non-fighter spin-off (which I would kill someone in front of their own mother to get my hands on :3). Just looking for any solid news I can get regarding new games in the DoA universe.

I enjoyed DoA 4 but, honestly, I really suck at 3D fighters. I prefer to 2D any day.

I usually played Jann Lee and La Mariposa.

I haven't heard anything about other spin off games, but I'm all for the revival of Code Chronus, an RPG based in the DOA universe starting Kasumi and Ayane as partners! What's not to love!

as for the fighting game itself I agree with TC, I play just about every fighting game out there and have been winning tournaments of Soul Calibur V and Street Fighter X Tekken, but I have to admit the simplicity of DOA is great for new players and when you get down to it the game does offer A LOT of depth
also quick fact, Fighting Vipers, Rumble Roses, Arcana Heart, and Variable Geo have WAY more female fighters than DOA

as for my mains, female: Ayane - insane combos and the two stances she can take make her a really unpredictable character, 2nd would be Hitomi (I mention her because in DOADimensions, they both have about the same usage percent)
for the males: usually Leon - he's just very easy to use and far more lethal than Gen-Fu

I believe DoA is currently undergoing playtesting for a console release of their previously thought to be only handheld release of their next game. I forget what it's called. My only memories of the games are that the gameplay is basically a glorified game of rock-paper-scissors and that the jiggle physics aren't especially convincing.

I've always liked them but my friends always said that the counters system was too cheap so it was hard to get them to buy them with me. The new one looks nice but I hate playing fighting games online as each match usually consists of my opponent using the easiest, cheapest tactics they know how to win, me refusing to do so until it looks like I might lose, me caving and using the cheap tactics myself and then me taking a Silkwood shower to try to get the filth off of me.

Christie and Jann Lee are my favs. You can pull some nice juggles with Jann if you time it right and Christie is just boss.

THAT'S THE ONE! Couldn't remember what it was but yeah, that's the game that I had heard about and that prompted this comment:

I was REEEEEEEEEEEEALLY wanting that game to come out!

As for characters, Leon and Bayman are just big juggernauts. All their throws and counters are just RIDICULOUSLY powerful and usually combo into two or three steps.

:p That reminds me of my experience with MvC 3. My best team was the dog (always forget its name), Zero, and Doom. I could pull off some pretty sweet stuff, but when all else fails: spam the fuck outta Plasma Beam.

But that's why I liked the DoA simplicity: it's almost impossible to lock someone into a cheap-move loop that they can't break out of. If you're beating their face in repeatedly all they have to do is throw up a counter and they break free. If you're throwing them around the ring all they have to do is throw in a well-timed attack. And if you're just sitting there waiting to use a counter they just have to run up and throw you.

Now, that's not to say that there haven't been some games where I've just absolutely decimated my opponent...like it wasn't even funny. But I honestly believe that DoA's fighting system is the most balanced one in the game. Truly anyone can pick up the game and start playing and at least have a fairly good shot at beating someone who's been playing for a while.
