Dead Rising 3 Ditches The Race Against The Clock

Dead Rising 3 executive producer Josh Bridge also talks about the game's smartphone intergration.

"The past installments [of Dead rising] were relatively regimented and you were kind of forced along at a particular rate of time. Now we've unlocked that to really let you explore this world," Dead Rising 3 executive producer Josh Bridge told the L.A. Times [http://herocomplex.latimes.com/games/dead-rising-3-producer-max-brooks-on-zombies-xbox-one-new-poster/] in a panel ahead of comicon. "We went deeper with more stuff to interact with, more areas to explore, it just feels like a much richer world as a result."

Dead Rising 1 and 2 featured "timeline" based missions, which had to be completed within a set amount of in-game hours, or you would fail. The first game was particularly brutal as it only had a single save slot, meaning you could save yourself into a corner if you weren't careful. I think it really pushed the "survival" aspect of the game's survival horror feel, but as many players greatly disliked the feature, it's good to see Capcom responding to customer feedback.

Bridge, at the insistence of his co-panelist Max Brooks, author of World War Z, also spilled the beans on the game's smartphone integration. "He's missing the best part!" exclaimed Brooks, "He's missing the reason he hooked me, which is, there's something called the ZDC in the world of the game. The ZDC will send you updates and information on your smartphone that you can hook up to the console. That's amazing!"

"It's as though the game kind of comes out of the screen and you're literally holding it in your hand. You'll get calls from this character, text messages and just additional game play from this device, which is kind of cool," added Bridge.

Dead Rising 3 is an Xbox One exclusive, and it will be available alongside the console's launch this November.

This sounds cool and all but having worked in the cell phone customer service hell for 3 years, all I can think of is how much I pity the poor bastards still in it that are going to have to explain to people with NO concept of cause and effect why they are being charged for texts on their phone for crap like this.

I swear practically 80% of all billing issues come from people using their phone to get a ringtone one time and not knowing they will be charged $9.99 a month for life, and that they need to deal with the company who is basically punishing them for their stupidity and NOT their cell provider.

Maybe that'll be a cool feature, a neat little ARG aspect - but it sounds to me more like it'll be really distracting and immersion-breaking. Just like having a screen on your controller that you have to keep looking down at. OH NO I DIDN'T!

Also, I read that headline as "Dead Rising 3 Ditches The Race Against The Cock". Just saying.

So, if I were to buy this game, I'd have even less content because I don't have a smartphone? Well, one more reason to not get this game now, I guess.

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DROP THE SMARTGLASS EXCLUSIVE BULL SHIT!!!!! This is one of the few games that could influence me to buy an Xbone but I will not as long as I have to connect my phone to get the full experience. I refuse to integrate my phone and I refuse to buy 80% of a game. Something has to give, and I'm a spiteful bastard so it aint gonna be me.

No...NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Why did they get rid of the clock!? It was the best bloody feature of the game and made it so much more intense and claustrophobic. No other game that I know of used this feature to heighten the atmosphere! Dead Rising is...dead to me now. This is worse than Fable 3.

But, as far as I was aware, the hardcore of the Dead Rising fanbase (including myself) actually enjoyed the time management aspect of the game. It actually made the game kind of challenging at times, but with good time management you had pleny of time to explore and find everything still.

But god forbid we have any sort of challenge in games any more.

You're starting to lose me here, Capcom. You're lucky that I remember Susan Arendt saying that the silly weapons and costumes are still there.

It´s really a shame, they are removing some of the things that made Dead Rising unique. I liked the time aspect of the games, you had to manage your time well which resulted in some pretty hard decisions at times. It was a very integral part of the gameplay experience imo. But now it´s just yet another open world zombie game, they even removed the colors... gah...

I guess all games has to be the same, why not just make a Dead Rising game and ignore all the people that hate time limits? The series was obviously never designed for them anyway.

So the wackiness and the timer, the two things that make dead rising unique and fun to play have been removed. Im astounded by Capcoms stupidity in this, stop trying to panda and start making a good game. You will never attract COD players to Dead Rising as they already have COD Zombies and those who want to just play COD Zombies will just play COD Zombies.
Please don't ruin a good thing

I'm pretty sure this is just a cool bonus thing...

If you don't integrate your phone you'll presumably just get the calls in game. Like you always have in any game that had a phone in it ever. I mean this is essentially the same as refusing to buy any game that supports kinect in some way, sure you don't get to make bizarre hand waves and shout orders at the TV in Mass Effect 3, but is that really locking you out of 20% of the content? No of course it isn't.

And next they will take out those pesky zombies because they sometimes kill the player, and not everyone likes that.

Even though it was frustrating at times I actually liked that Dead Rising had the timer, it was kind of immersive since you needed to think whether it was worth your time going off to do a certain mission if you were running out of time for something else. You could also completely ignore it and have fun going on a rampage, the timer was only really important if you wanted to do story missions or get some of the achievements. It was part of the Dead Rising identity which Capcom seem bent on destroying in the name of grey-brown generic 'progress'.

Fortunately it's an Xbone exclusive so I was never going to play it anyway.

Yes you do good sir. The clock is what annoyed me to the point where I only played sandbox mode.

The more information they release about this title, the less it it sounds like an actual Dead Rising game.

While I do agree with you, I think an opportunity was missed here I mean LOOK at this game: this is the kind of thing that screams "The Government has this city on lock-down...in 36 hours they're dropping the bomb" or something along those lines.

I would love to play a Dead Rising that is nothing but running around a city where any/every building can be entered and explored in real-time. The problem however is the price: I'm not buying an Xbone80, I bought Dead Rising & 2 & Case Zero & Case West because they were wacky/colorful.

Like I've said before though (in a hopeful tone of...thought) this game takes place in a city so there must surely be a red light district and/or, casino and/or, Mall and/or, arcade/family-fun-center or all of these things. Also; this is a game by Capcom; I can't believe this is an exclusive until the franchise dies since so many other Xbox-exclusive game franchises haven't remained exclusive forever or indeed very long.

Eh, immersive for some, soul crushingly distracting for others, especially having to find Zombrex and go back to kate so she can be administered otherwise it's gameover for some reason.

Quite frankly, I happy for it go, go from the gaming industry itself. One less, gritty realism mechanic.
