Have you ever wondered how Dawn of the dead would look if the protagonists just said: "Fuck it" Grabbed a chainsaw, a sickle, and a sledgehammer and just let the zombies in and started to slaughter them? Well, my guess is that it would be something like Dead rising.
You play as the pretentious free-lancer Frank West, who has come to williamtette to get the scoop of his life. You fly into town in a helicopter in a very immersive intro sequnce, which i won´t spoil for you. At first, Franks thinks it´s just a riot, however, he quickly finds out there´s something more than a mere riot here... ZOMBIES! After the immersive intro sequnce, you find yourself at the top off the helicopter pad at the local mall, with exactly 72 hours to find the big story, take some pictures, and get the hell out.
And this is were the real game starts. After a very brief tuturial-like sequnce, you´re dropped into the mall with a thousand oppurtunities. But sadly, many people judge the game in the wrong way, saying that the time limit is restrictive and tight, when it´s really not. You see, the time limit gives you 6 real time hours too do what-ever the fuck you want. Do you want to save survivors? Sure. Want to finsish the main case files? Sure. Just wanna kill zombies? SURE! And when you´re done, just restart and do the whole thing again!
However, since Frank is just a Journalist, he didn´t bring any super-weapons, and he(you) will haveto make due with what you got. And seeing as this is a mall, that´s alot off stuff you can kill stuff with. Benches, frying pans, gum-ball machines, cooking oil, shotguns the list goes on. Naturally, this wouldn´t be anything if all the weapons acted and felt the same. Thankfully, they don´t, and each weapon is diffrent in its own way.
Ofcourse, if you get tired of killing zombies, you can take part in some side activities, like rescuing survivors, killing physcos(The bosses of dead rising) and kill the survivors for having such a lousy AI. It´s one of the few problems with the game that i can think off. I know these people are scared and panic easily, but never in a zombie movie have i seen a guy run 1000 feet away from the marker where they´re supposed to go to whack a zombie in the face with a frying pan, only to get caught in some more zombies arms forcing me to come to the rescue.
The story of Dead rising is a suprisingly well-written one, filled with twists and expostion to keep you intrested. What´s cool is that Dead rising has a leveling system, and you need a high level (At least 30-35) to tackle the entire story, and each playthrough you get like 2 cases closer to the truth, so you create your own cliffhanger.
You level up by killing zombies, taking pictures, rescueing survivors and bringing down phycopaths. To get to level 50, you need to playthrough at least 6 times if you´re really good and can manage the time given to you. Anyway, let´s wrap it up with an awesomeClaw tip!
awesomeClaw tip: In your first playthrough, don´t even attempt to finish the story, it will just leave you frustrated and angry. Instead, level up as much as you can.

10/10. For me, this is as close to perfection a zombie game can come, and i hope Dead rising 2 will top that.
