very good idea if you havent been on live for 3+ plus years i can not see how you could complain when they take your gamer tag as your obviously not using it.
But to be honest i wish most people would come up with truely original as it always good to see that people who recognise my gamer tag from others games are actually recognising me.

Well that probably means mine is going to change. I don't think I have live anymore and I haven't been on in about 6 months.
The real solution would of course be to make a tag and a login ID separate. I see no reason at all why a tag needs to be unique. Steam doesn't have this problem to name one working system.
The wish to be unique will prevent seeing too many duplicates, but 3/4 people using the same tag is hardly a problem...

Nice! My XBOX just got the Red-Button (Concidentally, my PC Got a blue-screen a week ago, YAH FOR TASK MANAGER!) So I'll be happy to bring it back from the Repair shop and Racking up my Gamer-Point's and finally finishing Lego Star War's. That would be if the bloody thing will actually get fixed withing the next Millenium or so.
Just because you let your "Gold" membership lapse, that shouldn't mean they will release your gamertag. Log into XBL as a "Silver" ("Free") member once in a while and that would easily signal to them that you are still active on your XB360. If you don't have an internet connection for your XB360? Try logging in to xboxlive.com once in a while with your account that is connected to your gamertag. Either of those actions would easily signal to MS that you are still using the gamertag.
In regards to "all of the good names without numbers/symbols are taken"... WTF? You have 15 characters that can use any combination of 26 letters and a space. That's over 2.954 sextillion combinations... or 2,954 billion billion. Even if every one of the 30+ million XB360 owners had an active account on XBL, that's almost 100 trillion combinations for each owner. If a person is so bereft of imagination that they can't come up with a unique AND legible gamertag without resorting to 1337-speak... that's just sad.
And yes, the irony of these statements from a disposable user account made with a random combination of letters and numbers is NOT lost on this poster.

Just think of how many dead tags they have thanks to all those banwaves...now people can get their old handles back just in time for the next banwave!
meh.. i wanted prawn of the dead but it doesnt fit....made me miss pc gaming least in unreal i could go about as i_eat_teddybears n other equally random names (figured if people are to busy taking the piss out of my name they wont notice me sneaking up behind em)

To my recollection I do remember you getting ONE gamer tag change for free, and after that its the 800 ms or $10. Which is a joke, since changing a gamer tag takes no effort and/or resources on Microsoft's part to do so.
I got a 360 again the other day and signed onto live, but Xbox gave me my gamertag without letting me choose (GreasyPurse or something stupid =/) so I had to use that one change up straight away xPBox-of-the-Dead said:

Thank god. I wanted Tobinator or El Tobino because my name is Tobin. Someone actually took both of those so I had to end up going with T0b1na70r. While on the topic, how do I link my gamertag to my profile?
