How expensive would buying Hulu be just to fuck over it's users? Wouldn't it be cheaper just to develop there own OTT offering.

Hulu is jointly owned by Fox, Disney-ABC and NBCUniversal who each have a 1/3rd stake in the company. Time Warner isn't going to get that 25% stake if the reason they're doing it is to openly push people away from the service.

Which I also think may be illegal in the US.

Pretty sure the other stakeholders could have a good case against such a move if it happened. As a company, Hulu is built to make money. The controlling stakeholders intentionally making the service crap in order to help themselves would be a breach of their purpose, and illegal under American law.

I am fairly certain that hostile takeovers to undermine a competitor are, in fact, illegal. However, it does happen from time to time without any sort of punishment.

As for the notion that cable is dying... well, they should have known this was coming. I remember years ago, it was speculated that streaming services, either as mega providers like Netflix or individual stations like Discovery, was going to become a thing. Time Warner was warned in advance. Everyone saw this coming. A lot of people made the suggestion that cable only service should be dissolved, and cable providers should voluntarily switch to a per channel streaming service. It was even pointed out that this would probably be cheaper to implement, since a lot of 'chaff' channels would be eliminated, and you could charge more for individual channels then you may get from packages.

The opportunity was there. They passed it up. Now, the only move they have left is the destruction of net neutrality and the dirtiest street fight moves available to corporations. Its unsurprising, really.

Its kind of amazing that Hulu is a thing tbh. Its jointly owned by cable companies that willingly put their content on the day after it airs on television. I don't care how many ads there are, there's still fewer ads than watching a live broadcast. Plus for what...15 bucks a month you can just get rid of the ads entirely.

Cable companies embracing the future. That's fuckin strange.

Now Time Warner wants to fuck it all up.

As I've said before, nothing would make me drop Hulu faster than losing next day streaming. Do I use it for anime? Absolutely! However there's multiple ways to watch anime online. The only way to watch current television online is Hulu. Without it I have no reason to keep it around.

Without next day streaming, what does Hulu have over Amazon Prime or Netflix? Their movie library is worse, their browsing interface is pretty terrible, their streaming software is pretty iffy at times (I have to constantly lower and raise the quality while watching on my Kindle because it gets stuck buffering forever for no reason), they're only just now getting started on original content, and it has ads unless you pay more. There's no benefit to Hulu without next day streaming. Taking it out effectively kills the service.

Progress moves on. Either join it, or whither. There are always some old dinosaurs trying to stop the March of progress, instead of learning to evolve.
