Has Toughie lost his mind? Starting an RP at the same time that the election is going on?
As a matter of fact, I have not. I have been wanting to do a new RP for a good long time. And popular vote says that the masses want me to do an RP based off of the best manga/anime series that there ever was: Death note
Here is how things are going to work, as I have borrowed heavily from Qayin's earlier attempt to start an RP, but I have added a few elements to fix what I saw as flaws with his plans. You see, I want to be part of the investigation, and If I know who Kira is, it will become infinitely harder to be an active part of the investigation.
To fix this problem, I have scoured the lands of the escapist in order to find a player to play the role of Shinigami
the Shinigami will look at your character profiles and choose one of the players to give the death note to. The only people who know who the Shinigami will be me and Kira.
All of the technical rules of the Series apply to this RP, the owner of the Notebook will be able to forfeit ownership of the book at any time, and they will be more then welcome to make the shinigami eye deal whenever they want.
Now is where it gets complicated. the shinigami will be looking out for his own interests, so he may very well back stab you in order to have his own interests met. If you become Kira then the shinigami may very well more of an enemy then the investigation force, but if you are intelligent, this player may be a great ally for you as well.
It's all about being smart. Just like the Series

update 1- starting the game
You will need a character sheet which our Shinigami will use to pick Kira, obviously, I am out of the running. But any of you could be Kira, it all depends on who the Shinigami picks. That means that rather or not you are Kira is absolutely out of your control. All you can do is write up a good character sheet and cross your fingers that our mystery shinigami picks/ doesn't pick you.

Personality: Try to make it decent length, at least a regular paragraph in size
Occupation: What your job is, it can be anything from a police officer to a mailman, but it has to be a mundane job that actual people can get hired for.

She has fairly long almost white blonde hair reaching down to her scapula and has complete heterochromia, her right eye being of a dark blue, almost deep purple tint, and her left being almost silvery, making her look just about as mad as one could imagine from a first look on a pale, thin face. She constantly looks malnourished, and her posture does no favours for this. Some of the kids in the vault took to calling her some kind of wraith for how she seems to stalk around, light of foot and wary of nature. Most often wears a white, thin sweater, black pants or jeans, and white sneakers.

She has taken to this habit from having bad experience of people getting scared when she decides to talk. Occupation: Cashier at a game store (across the street from a Circuit City believe it or not)
History: Alex has always had an ordinary life, with his ordinary. Nothing of any particular interest ever happened. Every day it was the same old thing. And he hated it. So, to try and escape this monotony he spent more time playing video games and surfing the net. All the while thinking to himself, "Why can't real life be this interesting?"
Though he was very smart, he barley passed high school. He never put much effort into his school work, as he saw no point in working toward careers he would hate anyway.
And then the Kira killing began...
When they started, Alex couldn't believe it. Criminals being dieing all over the world in the exact same way, this couldn't be real. But as they continued he began to believe, and then grew transfixed on Kira. He didn't care what Kira was doing, or why Kira was doing it, all Alex wanted to know was: How? How does Kira break the laws of physics and kill so many people anywhere in the world in the exact same way? Alien technology? Magic? Alex had to know. So he made it his mission he find Kira, and discover the secret to his power. He created a website "www.whereiskira.com" to try and collect as much information on Kira possible. On the website, he adopted the name "Vex". He spent countless hours scouring the Internet for the information he could find, and trying to piece it together. He would sometimes spend days without rest trying to find Kira. But in the end, his efforts were fruitless.
One day the killing stopped indefinitely, and the new made an shocking announcement, "Kira is dead." The media told him nothing about how Kira did it, or even who Kira was. On the net there were many supposed government leaks explain Kira's method of killing. Everything from biological weapons, to magical note books. It was impossible to if any were real.
The announcement crushed Vex, all that time and effort, wasted. He sunk into a deep depression, and even attempted suicide. After the attempt, all he could do was sigh, and go back to his normal, everyday life. Or so he thought..

Personality: He loves to lose, because losing is the only way he can learn from mistakes. He is a researcher who can tirelessly find points in data that seem odd to others. He learns quickly and puts all hes learned to the test immeadiantely after learning. He hates to gloat and loves to be kind to those even if he personaly hates them. He is a master at chess, after lossing Aproximmetly 200 times by his count he is now unbeatable within his state. He never takes chances. He was always a middle ground student, never cared for school yet mantained a 3.2 GPA. He is obsessed with games, no one truly knows why. He perfers turn based strategy games with an overview of the map, ex. Spi version of LOTR "war of the ring".
He is physically weak.
The man he looks up to the most is: Edward Nigma a.k.a The Riddler, because he gets his ass handed to him and comes back every week for some more.
Occupation: Student, in college to become a prosecuting attorney for the state, because if he becomes a defense attorney he feels guilt if his client losses and faces a sentence, but if hes a proceuting attorney if the "guilty party" goes free it is the fault of the jury. He also works part-time as a chasier at Best Buy.
History: Raised by a single father this man was raised by a neglectful dad who was absorbed into his job. He found himself finding entertainment from games, single and multiplayer. At 14, he truly discovered chess and wished to master this by challenging every one he knew at it. Nate was always semi-popular, however he could talk any man down a corridor with his charisma. His one weakness is a woman, he doesn't know fully how to communicate with a woman.
Example: Age 16 Nate once smashed a woman at chess, and toyed with her mentally until she was crying. Nate having feelings for this woman, after he checkmated her, asked her out. He was reported to have multiple brusing on his face and a cut on his upper lip he refused to clean, resulting in a small half inch long scar. The girls family died 5 months later due to a gas leak.

Personality: A kind soul, if rather unstable. He tends to take a passive role in his life, rather unassertive. He looks at his world and the people around him as a child might an ant farm. This results in him being a rather distant person with few people close to him.
Occupation: High School Psychology teacher
History: His family has an history of intense paranoia and schizophrenia. Through his youth, he seemed to be quite normal, even above average in his studies and concepts of the human mind. However, when he discovered the unusual case of Kira, his sense of stability and justice came crashing down. He became reclusive and obsessed with Kira, studying Kira's usual victims and attempting to detect any patterns. At 17, he was committed by his parents to a mental facility, where he attempted with the information he already had to discover Kira's identity, writing notes of his "discoveries" on the walls of his room. When Kira was caught and killed a year and a half later, he returned to a sense of sanity and was released after another few months of confinement. He went on to become a psychology teacher at his old high school and returned to a life of normalcy. But, if Kira has returned, will his sanity last?

Personality: Paranoid, closed, but mostly an OK guy. Often he finds himself playing the devil's advocate, because that role needs to be played aswell. Unfortunately this tends to give him more perspective then is good for him, leading to bad decisions, and even worse endings.
Occupation: Defense lawyer.
History: A normal childhood formed a stable child and a good student allround. During his time in college, the previous Kira struck many of his friends and relatives. Causing him to succumb to the mass paranoia unavoidable to most.
After finishing lawschool he went to defend many criminals, getting mixed results, because he now knows that even the scum of the earth deserve some form of salvation.
Unfortunately he recently lost one of his cases, leaving one yakuza-gangster very, very angry. He already was so paranoid that nobody(not even his helpers) knew him by anyother name then maxillion, but after months of yakuza hurassing he's truly snapped.
He has lost the yakuza by moving across the country, and now is truly lost. Not because of moving, but inside his own mind.

History: Cerberus was born to a normal life in a normal family. When he graduated from high school he immediatly went to community college and got a degree to become a cook. Sometime after, he got his name changed to a better one but he kept part of him name the same. Hs then landed a job a a pretty good resturant(not the best but still) and stayed there for five years, saving up his money. 6 months back he started going back to college to get a degree that would allow him to become a professional chef(also, he still works at the resturant).

Update 3- Q&A
Will there be mandatory post times?
Not really, this RP will be extremely slow, in fact, we'll be playing it in Real Time. You see, Kira will be attempting to get close enough to us to get our names (He/She doesn't want to make the eye deal if at all possible), and us, as the investigation team, will be trying to find out which among us is Kira.
Everybody will get one major post in the RP a day, but the bulk of the thinking and information gathering will take place through PM. You will have to PM the other players to gather any information they may have as well as speculate on who Kira may or may not be.
But be careful, the person that you are talking to may very well be Kira... only time will tell.

Kira is hidden somewhere in the escapist. The one that you are trying to find is a person that contacted me through PM and have me a most evil idea.
So, I will, instead of actively partaking in the RP, put down a large post every day with a freakishly subtle hint as to which among escapists is Kira.
when you think you know who Kira is, post your accusation in the thread. Be warned though, if you guess wrong...
