Death Note is good, and one of the better psychological dramas I've encountered. It wrestles with interesting moral problems, has a good set of characters and one of the most interesting games of cat-and-mouse outsmarting I've ever seen.

And yes, as others have commented, the series does drop from 'great' to 'okay' about two thirds into the series after the event you had been spoiled for. I'm not going to spoil exactly why, but let's just say that things can't manage to stay quite as interesting after that certain turn of events.

Still, I'd say it's worth your time.

I thought Death Note was fairly interesting although it takes a pretty big downturn halfway through.

BERSERK is way up there but it's absurdly violent and dark. Not sure if it's for you.

All I know is that this is the best scene in the entire series:

OK, so I've finished the anime with episode 37 and...I'm still genuinely moved by the ending. I actually thought it stayed consistently brilliant throughout, with all the mind games between Light and L/Near (I did like Near), all the Kira stuff, what happened with Mello...I really liked it. It's amazing that it all just began from a Shinigami dropping a Death Note into the human world because he was bored.

Well...apart from a few niggles.
It's kind of strange that, even after four or so years, Light and his team continue trying to find Kira with no leads (while the majority of the world, including the US President, has pretty much accepted Kira by now - unsurprisingly, since I think L only ever died because he couldn't compete with the supernatural powers Light had at his command), with Light passing off his Death Note to subordinates to do the killing for him because his colleagues would get too suspicious - which makes it feel like he didn't really capitalize enough on his grand plan to become "God of the new world".

Oh, and I hated Misa Amane. She just felt out-of-place and her role was, at best, a convenient plot device to compensate for Light's lack of Shinigami eyes, while at worst, cheap fanservice.

As for Mello...overall, meh. While L's habit of eating mainly sweet foods was endearing, Mello's habit of eating chocolate seems like a random character quirk that just came off as weird. I like his character design, though.
