Even though I have a big TV I still can't stand Split-Screen, I prefer to have all the screen to myself, plus online is way better.

Not true at all. The command for split screen on L4D PC is invaluable when one of my friends come over, two of us and two online, good stuff.

Also I don't care how far gone we are from split screen gaming, nothing can beat physically sitting in front of a screen with your friends and playing a game in my opinion, nothing.

All I really want to see is 4 player GoW co-op. They already have four characters that we've connected with.

I've gotten to a point where I hate playing split screen now...only time I actually play with someone now is on the wii with Mario Kart, REUC, and Brawl...

Dont know if its been mentioned but the split screen on CoD WaW on 360 is terrible.. worst ive ever seen im running it 40" widescreen on 1080i and it puts two tiny boxes the size of a portrait A4 piece of paper on the screen to play off. was a joke that we had to sit like a metre from the screen to play.

Before you ask for 4 player split to come back they better get 2 players right, give us 2 player online play or a proper coop system which follows the main campaign story or saves progression. It would be good to enable a tutorial for coop showing any team work things you can do or the controls as the other person playing doesnt usually own the game to know all the controls.

If its too strenuous on the console allow us to run the game off one disk on a lan..

No matter how big the screen is, a game is just better when you have the screen to yourself. This is true for Gears of War and CoD5, it just looks BETTER on one screen. Plus you generally play better as well, in CoD5 I couldn't tell if I was shooting an ally or a Japanese, I wasn't able to tell until the guy got close enough to bayonet me. And my screen is huge.
Thats because CoD5 has that absolutely stupid thing in split screen where the actual screens are in the corners, and half the screen is emptiness.

Seconded. This is why I still play Halo a decent amount.

Do you know why they aren't bothering with split-screen gaming anymore? Because split-screen sucks. Fucking seriously. While there is no reason for games that don't need to split-screen (sports games, castle crashers, etc) to not have a four person gaming mode, I really wouldn't want to play four-person split-screened Halo or Call of Duty or even Left 4 Dead on my TV. If I had one of those sixty inch behemoths, maybe, but on my 32" TV? Hell no, even split screen on Gears 2 was uncomfortable.
No one if forcing you to use the split screen feature. I also doubt that because you have a 4 player split screen feature on your game, that 3 people will barge into your house, and demand to have you play with them so that you get your screen all split. But my main point is that even not split screen games, are lacking in quantity for the current gen.
If you're not really talking about the lack of 4 person split screen on console games, but rather talking about the lack of quality in non split-screen games, then why make a topic of about split-screen in games? That doesn't make sense.

The reason you aren't seeing split screen so much is because consoles are becoming far more wide spread, as is online use. Why waste time on something that nobody but a minority of the vast population still relies on split-screen to play with their friends. And if I were to host a shindig with enough people to justify playing together, I'd probably be to interested in talking to girls and other such things to worry about split screening Call of Duty.
If you had actually read my original post, you would have seen that I made this about 4 player co-op on one console, not about split screen. You would have also noticed that i mentioned Champions of norrath as my prime example. That being a non split screen game, it is top down action rpg. It was brought up not by me, but others that 4 player split screen is bad. I do see some of the downsides to it, but also a lot of upsides, and the downsides are not pressed on anyone aside form those looking for a 4 player game, in which case they can deal with it.

Okay, my bad, I got a bit confused was only responding to one point of what you said, then you said something different and I responded to that. Okay, here's why you don't see a lot of those games: the big market is currently FPS's. Seriously, nobody is that interested in top-down action RPGs that much. They make a fun diversion for an evening, but they're not going to sell as nearly as well as Gears of War 3 or Half-life 2: Episode 3 will.

My humble opinion:

Any racing game without split-screen is instant fail.

Fps-es can sorta get away with it, but not if they offer a co-op mode. To hell with online only co-op (and I hope the trend dies quick its been bugging me for a while now), I only play co-op with people in the room.

i think that 4-player spliscreen is something all games (that support co-op) should have. When you have a game called Left "4" Dead, you would think that enough emphasis would be put on having 4 players being able to play at once. I have a nice big TV, and splitting it into 4 wouldnt be a problem. Do i think its the best for gaming? No, but neither is 2 players, but the fun had when playing Halo 1/2 on 4-player splitscreen should be played on recent games as well.

Getting more people in a room increases the fun. Fact.

Man, I love the splitscreen deathmatch. Timesplitters. Build your own levels. Players 1&3 vs 2&4, sheet down the middle of the screen. Brilliant.
Some of the best gaming times.

I remember playing Goldeneye with a cardboard stuck across a 26" CRT being great but better since getting a big LCD.

Not true, I love split screen, and I always wish devs would add 4 player split screen (specifically co-op) into their games. Being able to play with your buddies or family in the same room is fun, and it adds instant replayability to the game.

There's nothing wrong with split screen. The reason its dead is so that you have to buy another X-box to play with your friends or at least buy the same game for your X-box. Or at least get X-box live to play it online. Its all a big money making scheme.

Racing games, yes. FPS games, no.

The only reason FPS has ever been good in splitscreen was because online play was not common at that time. Now that online play is dominant, splitscreen isn't really necessary, but I don't see how it's a difficult feature to add and there's no reason not to include. It's just that most people aren't going to even touch. I never do.

Splitscreen > Online play

I always played splitscreen. I could get all my friends together and play a FPS. Now we're stuck with online play. it's better in some ways, but splitscreen should always be an option.

I agree, now that TV are getting biger and biger, why should you share 53'' of HD glory.

Talking of split screen and a dislike of sharing.. has anyone here played 4-player Micro-Machines on the PS1 with 2 controllers, where 2 people each share a controller?

It brings a whole new level of competitiveness and cooperation.

Starfox 64 was probably my first and best use of four player split screen action, but after being frustrated with 16 player (4 system) LAN Halo, I've gotten tired of the idea. I much prefer my own big screen. Although when introducing a new game to a friend, I would much prefer a split-screen style of play to help walk them through the game. But if I were playing on a higher difficulty and were more concerned with reaching a harder goal, gimmie my own big screen every time.
