Recently, i walked into a hallywood video expecting to find a good single console splitscreen game (xbox live is too expensive lol) and the best i could find was soulcalibur, and looking around the shelves revealed about 50 better games that COULD have been splitscreen... And its kind of a pain in the ass to have to play the same damn halo level every time my friends come over. i belive that split screen is becoming overlooked with the use of online multiplayer on the rise, yet its expensive to maintain, aggrovating half the time (douchebag opponents), and overall a less fun and social experience than blowing the brains out of zombies with you best friends next to you. A good example of a GREAT splitscreen game is gears of war 2. that had some of, in my opinion, the best splitscreen experience of any game, and for some reason no other games caught on... just a thought. plz post what you think and WHY. also, suggestions for games that could become better with splitscreen would be cool (fallout 3, anyone?)...

p.s possiblly the most annoying thing ever- splitscreen, but ONLY online :p im pretty shore mercinarys 2 does this...

YES! Thank you for brining this up! Back with Halo 3, we could 4-player multi, but now with MW2, we can't even do it at all (except 2-way in campaign). I'm not even sure why it isn't supported, it can't be that hard to do...

One thing contributing to the lack of splitscreen may be computing power necessary to run a lot of the games these days. Imagine the kind of computing power necessary to render two independent screens of Uncharted 2. The focus on online multiplayer also takes a lot of attention away from splitscreen development. One final reason is that it may more economically favorable for companies to not promote splitscreen. If two people can't play pn the same machine, you have created an incentive for the consumer to now purchase two copies of your game.

I think there's a chance for the splitscreen to make a comeback. We just need a bit more consumer demand, and consoles with the necessary power to run some good looking games with two independant screens while not being optimized.

The lack of splitscreen goes back to the lack of processing power. And it doesn't matter what system you're on. Killzone 2? Uncharted 2? MW2?

These games (and all other ones) should all have 4-player splitscreen, especially with online play. Otherwise, it's tiring and frustrating to hear console fanboys harp on and on about how important playing with your friends on a couch is when you can't even do that.

That's why Brawl still gets played a lot more than any of the games my roommates and I have.

completely agree, gears 2 was awesome for freakin splitscreen, i really can't think of a better moment of gaming some co op with me and a budd, good times

there are so many games they could and i really wish they would incorporate with, such as fallout 3 as someone mentioned, or dragons age, or uncharted, or so many moree..can it really be that hard to add on? all it does is add to the replay value of the game, i really can't see a downside of adding it in

I'm gonna admit Far Cry 2 might be fun co-op. Just have them choose another merc, and the two of you ride around blasting people. I know I'd have fun blasting people from the passenger seat of a Jeep Liberty.

Sadly, the death of splitscreen is inexorably tied to the death of a hundred other hallmarks of the golden age of gaming that have been executed in the name of technological "advancement" and mainstream consumerism.

You won't be seeing it much outside of retro revival.

i completely agree. with todays games, i get better looks and more game, but why does the graphics of today have to play such a huge roll in the way we look at games? super smash brothers brawl, goldeneye, hell, even pacman or galiga wheer and still are enourmus fun and they had bad graphics compared to the likes of uncharted and such...

all i think is that graphics shouldent define a game, especially if it compramises the multiplayer experience.

Haha, no. The Golden Age being the Golden Age. Inception to the 8/16-bit era. I'm agreeing with you.

I'm saying that really fun, awesome stuff like splitscreen multiplayer has largely been sacrficed in favor of making games with ULTRA-REALISTIC WATER REFLECTION and redundant online multiplayer.

I hated split screen. I refuse to play it now whenever i can.

It means i cant snipe or play stealth as EVERYONE screen looks (dont deny you dont), And the screens are so tiny you can barely see anyone (even on a Big HDTV).

Lans are the way forward.

Splitscreen IMO is horrible...
You get half of a screen, which is only decent when you have a 52" TV, not when you have an average 32". And in a match against friends, it's basically a "Who is a better screen peeker" contest...

Me and my friends log more time on 4 player battlefront 2 than anything else really. more ppl with live = less splitscreen.

Can somebody answer me why in the few occasions I've played splitscreen on my friends consoles it has a chunk screen either side "missing"? Just black showing.

Like on Resident Evil 5 for example and I know I've played others like it.

Well there are still a few games out there with it. Borderlands, for example, does have split screen and to its credit it works as well as the online aspect, save for my main problem with split screen, you can see half as much as normal online play. Its not as big an issue when you have a good sized TV but me and my smaller standard def tv, just can't take it, you just can't see much.

As for the second part, I do remember Rainbow Six Vegas (the first one aka the superior one) had great split-screen, especially for Terrorist Hunt mode. A cool game to have split-screen on would be Bayonetta, could you imagine two people pulling off insane combos in that game? The space awesome continuum would tear apart like paper

If you liked Gears of War, then check out Army of Two. It's kind of the same style of gameplay, and tons of fun to play with a friend.
