Well i remember a while ago with the problems in Kenya the BBC news had footage of a man being beaten down and then hacked up by a machete and i was not at all shocked by this, my family where shocked by it but i was not. That was probably because i know no Kenyans i only know about three black people(in our area that's all of them) but in some world war 2 archive footage there are pictures and films of Wehrmacht soldiers being executed now this was brutal stuff( gun butts to the face, multiple gun shots etc.) and i felt horrified because my grandfather was in the Wehrmacht and he was a subject to these tortures and i felt absolutely sick.

I have been slightly de-sensitized by video-game violence but not completely.

EDIT: I just remembered a few weeks back the BBC(ol' reliable) showed footage of these Russian skin heads going around and beating up anyone with darker skin than them and it was rather traumatizing because on of the victims(who died i think) begged for mercy because he had a wife and kids it was sick, really not nice.

Violence really only bothers people when they can empathize with the victim.

Like in Darthracoon's example, when it hits home. And it amuses me to no end to find that someone is willing to admit that they don't care about innocent black people getting hacked to bits by other black people, but they feel absolutely sick seeing Nazis get executed.

It's all about who you empathize with or if you, as a person, give a damn.

Having seen peoples' heads sawed off by radical Muslims I can say nothing bothers me anymore. Thank you Iraq and Chechnya.

Well people are violent deep down so I would'nt be surprised if people get joy out of seeing other people die. I have a friend who laughs at people dieing like it the funnyist thing, I realy don't understand it but hey thats him not me.
Hey, if someone gets his head smashed in while taking a shit, or shits himself while getting smashed in the head.. that's hilarious..
You can find humor in anything like death, when you're not seeing it in person.
Well maybe it's just me but I don't care if the person's head blows up into confetti, sure it would look funny but for me I'm seein the person dead not the humor of what or how it happened. But hey thats just me.

Read 7 Days to Fame (comic book). It's about a suicide game show. It's really disturbing to think that such a thing could happen in real life.
Hi, thanks for mentioning my comic book series "7 Days to Fame." The story I wrote was about a Reality TV show where people go on live TV and webcasts to commit suicide. It got a lot of great reviews when it came out, now it's sort of being viewed as speculative fiction that's coming true.

I'm not going to go all self-promotion here, but I will provide a link:

I'd be interested in hearing what people think of the concept.

As far as Destroyed in Seconds goes, you probably haven't watched the show have you? In none of the clips that are shown does anyone die, true some people are hurt, but all of the ones I have seen involve nothing more serious than a broken leg or burns. And most of the time the people in the clips come out with nothing more than cuts and bruises. It is a Discovery Channel show man, do you really think they would be so insensitive they would show real people dying on Television?

I think to an extent the combination of television, internet and games desensitises us to the point where the brain doesn't see death as shocking anymore.
Actually I think it is because of the disconnect between actually seeing something happen, and seeing it happen on a screen. If you were actually there, in the room or at the airshow or where ever, then it would be different.

Well 2 people did die in the rocket fuel facility explosion they showed, but that wasn't explicitly shown of course.

Oh, well I hadn't seen that one, so I guess in none of the ones that I have seen does any one die. And I am willing to bet that all you see is the explosion from a distance, I seriously doubt they show anything gruesome.

my mother on the other hand very happilly eats spagetti whilst watching theat Freen guy use his suicide machine on somebody on TV. she refused to change the channel and i left the room. i didnt see the moment of death but it still freaks me out. how can anyone gain entertainment from the death of real people?
I really don't know what you are talking about here, could you explain? Am I reading it right that there is an actual show where people commit suicide on TV? Thats freaking messed up crap right there.
