Last night i was hanging with one of my one of my friends and he told me something that kinda makes me angry... he told me he say an article on yahoo that said the Barns and Nobles was going to be run out of business by things like the Kindle and Nook. And if big stores like that are getting run out of business who knows how long till there is nothing but reading from a Kindle or Nook (maybe an over dramatization but...). Now i don't know about everyone on the escapist but when i read i would rather hold a real book and read it rather than read it off of a computer screen. yes i see the irony of saying that on internet forums where everything is on a computer screen, but i mean for sitting down and reading a full book.

So what do you think fellow escapists. I say Death to the Kindle and Nook.

Amazon is cheaper, popular, been around longer than Kindle or Kook, you can get anything you want without leaving your home, and yet Target, Best Buy, even Wal-Mart and, get this, K-Mart are still thriving and as popular as ever. Okay maybe not all the stores are popular, but you know what I mean. Your friend is thinking worst case, a worst case that isn't likely.

I'd say death to kindle, but mostly cos its useless...
As far as death to new technology making old media redundant... who cares... things get improved, things get left behind, its the way of the world. Deal with it. Sorry to sounds so harsh... but its the truth

Well I never liked those things either, but the Kindle and Nook market is still very small. It would be hard to see that be the dominate reading device for at least another 20 years.

I've seen maybe 2 people use an ebook. Nothing beats having a physical copy of a book, the feel of the pages. Sitting in bed at night with my bedside lamp would probably be a whole lot crappier if I've got some god awful LED plastic crap shining in my face...

The only reason the media is consistently reporting how eBooks are gaining in popularity is because journalists are amoung the most likely to use this type of device.
Dam you publication bias.

Source? I can count the people I know who are so much as interested in an E-reader, let alone who own one, on the fingers of one hand. Now online retailers for physical books? Those tend to be cheaper and have a better selection than brick and mortar bookstores, with none of the downsides that come with the Kindle or the Nook -- like not having an actual book. That said, as long as there is a place for physical books, there will be a place for physical book stores. Ask anyone who spends a lot of time reading, and they'll tell you that there is no better smell than that of the books in a used book store. There's also the oppurtunity to browse, and flip through the books, or find random books on the shelf that you would never have known about if you hadn't seen them. You don't get any of that online, and you certainly don't get it with an e-reader.

Kindle is overpriced and a fad thing, though you can say that about a lot of technology today like the Ipod. One thing the Ipod had over kindle though is that it actually is convenient for music and going back to the cd player would be inconvenient and a step down, then going back form cd player to tape so on and on. Things like music and movies are great to have on the go and before the ipod and such you used to only be able to see it live or at a theater. Books however don't require anything more than a some paper.

You can take it anywhere read it anytime, fast forward or rewind. There has never been any drawback to a book, they don't take up much space. No reason to upgrade them, you no fix what isn't broke. I hope that most of the world sees this and doesn't buy into the kindle just for the sake of new technology.

Kindles and such are popular, but too many people still prefer to have a physical book in their hands. Same reason that Best Buy and Walmart still have a PC games section despite Steam being popular.

I think that the Kindles and Nooks are having a good run, but there is no hope of them overtaking the hard copies for a while. That being said, my sister just got a Nook, and it's pretty cool. Definitely fancy, and useful, but it really isn't the next big thing. It's just here to kill time like every other piece of technology ever.

Nook is by Barns and Noble......
And sorry but I think you're going to be on the losing end of this one.
Borders is having issues because it doesn't have it's own eReader to keep up with Amazon and Barns and Noble. While I think ereaders are still a bit too pricey (drop a 3G Kindle down to $150 and you'll have yourself a deal!), I still think that it's much more convenient to have a single Kindle than a massive wall of books that take up a lot of space.

When you live in a small apartment that wall of books can make the difference of whether you have a desk to put your computer on, or it goes on the floor....

Sorry mate, digital books are going to happen. (Another plus to digital books: way easier to preserve than paper ones).

Barnes and Nobles have their own version of the Kindle out, they call it the Nook. Its a better, cheaper and more effective way of reading and its only a matter of time before digital downloads replace paperback novels. I'm honestly surprised no one has created this sooner.

I'm having quite a bit of trouble taking ebooks seriously. I'm not quite the bibliophile I used to be, but I would never forsake a good book for a digital version that costs almost as much. Plus I can't really annotate the ebook version of a college textbook, which is especially disappointing considering there is no price difference. Whatever, video didn't kill radio, and ebooks ain't gonna drive good old paper out of business.

I've been fighting the machines for years. Unfortunately for me; the machines have started fighting back.

Why the hell would you shine an LED in your face? The Nook and Kindle use E-Ink not an LED display. I'd buy one if they were cheap enough.

Though the Nook/Kindle is nice(never actually used one but seen them) the digital media will probably never triumph over the Physical media. People like to get the real books for collections and libraries.
