anyone who has played fallout 3 at least halfway through knows that the ghouls and super mutants are mutated humans, the yao guai are black bears, the mole rats are, well, mole rats, the radroaches are cockroaches, the mirelurk are some kind of horseshoe crab, and the giant ants are(stop the presses!) ants.(watch out for the fire ants because when I first fought one, I didn't know that it din't get its name from bieng colored red)

the only mutated animal of which I cannot determine its origin, is the deathclaw

they look like nothing I have ever seen before

I want you to tell me what you think the deathclaw mutated from

Your Google-fu is weak, grasshopper.

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Deathclaw

They're genetically engineered creatures whose genes were spliced from various species of animals.

Horned Jackson's Chameleons.

Heavily modified and mutated, as noted in the link.

You want a real mindscrew? Try to puzzle out just what the hell wanamingos came from.

They are the Deathclaw, nothing before and nothing after.
Or they are a hybrid that has a small lizard (Sejs Cube got the name) as its base animal.

I imagine they are reptilian whatever they are given that's their description on the Fallout Wiki. So I think of them as a cross between a lizard, a dinosaur and Satan.

i think mirelurks are actually MD blue crabs because of the location of fallout 3 and the fact that the basic mirelurk is blue

Fun fact, Deathclaws are not sterilized by FEV, their immune system lets to mutate them but not sterilize them. It's like it tells itself what to heal.

I think they are some kind of FEV experiment? I'll have to look it up...

EDIT: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Deathclaws
The deathclaws were originally created before the Great War by the United States Military in order to replace humans during high-risk close-combat search-and-destroy missions. They were Jackson's Chameleons genetically modified with the DNA of various other species.

But cant they reproduce?
I mean there are so much in fallout 3, they must be breeding
But last time a checked Hybrids and Genetically engineered freaks generally cant Reproduce, its mother natures way of saying "No, Fuck that shit"

Now that i think about it, arnt they like the supermutants? i remember that the talking deathclaws were sterile no?

Like everyone has said, they were made through genetic engineering.

I remember that time when i took my first steps out of vault 101 to see 5 deathclaws... I think it was a bug in the game code.

I think they originate from chameleons... and have also been subject to FEV tests.
And some of them have hair and are able to speak. Badass.
Except, killing them is like killing ants. With a flamethrower.

How could you be so callous? Do you so quickly forget your lovely talking deathclaw friend from Fallout 2? Deathclaws are people too.

oh my god! i had the exact same thing! the first fire ant i fought scared the shit out of me! (and that was just a worker) I actually assumed they'd be harmless, or atleast relatively so. (and this was right after i existed the vault and killed one of those big scorpians)

I imagined the deathclaws to be humanoid at first tbh and then fucked up by mutation and then fucked up by the enclave, =/
