I have only recently gotten around to buying a PS3, and since then I have been catching up on my back log of ps3 games I have wanted to play.

But at the moment, I am caught at a decision.

I am unsure whether to go for the Killzone or the Resistance series first.

Which would you recommend more out of the two?

And then the next question, which one in the series should I start with? Because as far as I know, the first Killzone is only on ps2 isn't it?

So yeah, which series and then with installment first?

Thanks for the help guys.

Resistance. Killzone is pretty great, but Resistance is the more consistent series.

You can't really go wrong.

Well, it really depends on what you're looking for in a shooter.

The Resistance series has a lot of interesting and different kind of weapons, like the Hailstorm, which fires projectiles that richochet off surfaces or the Auger Rifle, which penetrates solid matter. The mix between traditional weapons and alien weapons is pretty great. Killzone is a lot more traditional here, even if there's still plenty of different weapons to choose from. Lightning gun from KZ2 is amazing, though.

Storywise, ingame at least, I'd have to say Resistance wins. Setting the game in the 1950's and discovering the origins of the Chimera, as well as who Hale(the PC) is, is a fascinating story. Killzone's ingame story is a bit lacking, sadly, I wish they'd somehow implemented the backstory more into thbe main game, because the back story is really where the meat is, of the Killzone universe is. The Helghast really aren't as much the bad guys as they're depicted in the games, imagery and culture aside. There wery more forced to become like that, than anything else.

In multiplayer, at least for me, Killzone wins out big time. I've spent many hours in both KZ2 and KZ3 multiplayer. The level design here in these maps are some of the best I'e ever seen and because of the Warzone mode, which is the one I play the most, the action on each map moves around as a new objective is selected. Warzone consists of 7 randomized objectives, including capture the flag, capture and hold, assasination, search and destroy and deathmatch. I only really played Resistance 2 co-op multiplayer, but from what I played, it was pretty fun. It was a lot more straightforward, seeing as objectives came in the same order each time, so it did become a bit more repetitive, than the KZ multiplayer.

So, as I said, it depends on what you're looking for. I'd personally go for the Killzone series, because I've really, really enjoyed the multiplayer of both 2 and 3, but if you're looking for a solid singleplayer experience, I'd say go for Resistance first. That's not to say that Killzone is a bad singleplayer game, far from from it. The AI in the game makes for a very hard opponent and makes the firefights really really intense. The Resistance series just have a more interesting weapon set up as well as a decent ingame story.

As for KZ1, get the entire trilogy, instead of buying them individually. Actually, the same can be said for the Resistance trilogy.

Resistance 3 was one of the best FPSs I've played this gen. Some insanely good set pieces and a lot of fun. Resistance 1 is flawed and a bit ugly now but still quite good. Resistance 2 was a bit "typical" of an FPS but had its moments.

I love Killzone quite a bit but as good as they are they never left a lasting impression on me. Although Killzone 3's multiplayer is fantastically good and I believe it might even be F2P now without owning the main game?(not sure on this, might have imagined it)

Both are great series. Never played KZ1, so can't comment.

FoM is a great game, it has the pace nailed down, and some truly awe inspiring moments. The ending is a love letter to Halo, so if you have any opinion on Bungie's premier shooter, keep that in mind. FoM has some really creative weapons that lend themselves to some imaginative gameplay.

I found Resistance 2 a bit meh, nothing essentially wrong with it, but it does tend to bog down around the middle.

KZ2 is also a great game. Lots of people criticise the story and characters, but I don't understand why. The story is as functional as Resistance, and the characters are more lively. Control on KZ2 takes some time to get used to, Sev (your character) is heavy with all his gear and it reflects on how he moves, once you get used to it, it just feels just right though. It also has amazing moments when big things just happen around you, the start of KZ2 is one of those WOW moments you won't forget anytime soon. The only true gripe I had with KZ2 was the end battle, which I found frustrating.

Both Resistance 3 and KZ3 are sitting in the shelf, waiting for their turn at this point, so can't really comment on either.

Conclusion, can't go wrong with either.

Like previous members have pointed out, you really can't go wrong with either of the two, they're both great series. Personally, I prefer the setting of Killzone over Resistance. Killzone is incredibly intense (I cannot stress this enough; the firefights are totally engulfing), urban warfare, where you struggle to fight the Helghast on their homeplanet Helgan, and their capital Phyrrus. The setting gives you strong resemblance of the WW2, and the allies invasion of Berlin (not so suprising, given that the developers are actually Dutch).

The setting allows for scifi elements, but for the most part, you are still battling other humans, only it is set in a dark and gritty future. In Resistance you are basically fighting other alien species, in a post apocalyptic setting, and the overall tone is just very different from the Killzone series IMO. So it's all down to personal preference really.

Iunno, I played Resistance co-op so maybe it's the addition of a partner that sold it for me.
This right here is the truth. The gameplay in Killzone is stiff, sluggish and and unenjoyable. Resistance 3 was a much more enjoyable game. It has better guns, better enemies, better characters, better controls and so on.

It depends on what sort of experience you want. Resistance plays out more like a top budget B-Movie, while Killzone is more Space Opera meets gritty combat.

Storywise, neither game is particularly strong, apart from Killzone 3, which has a fucking excellent villain dynamic.

Gameplay, Resistance is more run and gun, encouraging you to use your whole arsenal to gun down hordes of Chimera. It takes after Insomniac's earlier Ratchet and Clank games playing out in 1st Person. Killzone is a lot heavier with its combat, with an emphasis on cover and outmaneuvering the Helghast, who are by the way some of the smartest AI I've ever seen. The guns have more of a punch, but you don't get as many goofy weapons like the auger from Resistance.

I'd get both, but if I had to pick, I'd go with Killzone. First off, it's cheaper, since you can get the series in a collection now, and I liked the gameplay better. It isn't like other FPS games with the "twitch" based gaming. You have to be smart about your engagements, and you can't rely on auto aim (there is none).

I have just picked up Resistance myself, it's not bad, bit on the ugly side, but it is fun. So far though I think I like Killzone much more, and normally I hate FPSs on console, but Killzone to me just does it right.

I think the reason I like Killzone more is because it plays more like a PC FPS, at least to me. The biggest thing is the lack of auto aim. It reminds me of the precision shooting you need to do in a game like Stalker (you seem to know about what I mean). You are more cautious, without losing the intensity of the fight.

I played resistance for a longer time than Killzone, so I might be a little biased, but I would say that the Resistance series is better than Killzone in the single player experience, but resistance 3 does not have a great multiplayer. If you can get both series than do it, and I'll guarentee it will be a good experience.

Resistance is much better than the Killzone series

Has more fun weapons and a variety of enemies along with some decent aesthetics

Resistance all the way. I've never played the Killzone games, so take my recommendation with a grain of salt, but yeah. Resistance all the way.

The Resistance series has guns that shoot through walls, guns that shoot around corners, guns that freeze people, shotguns that light things on fire, guns that shoot gluts of disease at people, sniper rifles that allow you to slow down time, and guns capable of shooting their clips into the air which function as airborne auto-turrets kept aloft by the recoil from the bullets.

So. Yeah. Resistance has great guns. The first game (Resistance: Fall of Man) is a surprisingly dark, surprisingly hard run and gun shooter. The narrative is practically nonexistent, but the gameplay holds up very well even today. There's a good mix of environments and styles (big open battles, tense suspense levels, exploration-focused experiences, etc.) and they really give you the freedom to do what you want to do with the seventeen or so weapons that you accumulate throughout the game.

And it has bosses. Actual bosses.

Resistance 2 isn't a thing. There are people who claim it exists but they are wrong. It is untrue. You can't buy it, so you shouldn't. Because it doesn't exist.[footnote]Resistance 2 does actually exist, but the world would be better if it didn't.[/footnote]

Resistance 3 is similar, but far more polished. Better animations, more of a narrative, damn good graphics and aesthetics, much better level designs, etc.

Only one I haven't played out of the bunch is Killzone 1... but either than that.

Killzone is better for Multiplayer.
Resistance is better for Single Player.

Killzone is supposed to be clunky and heavy to play, the third Killzone is way too light, it always has been. Edit Though I understand the criticism, it's not necessarily for everyone, but it's just worth noting it's a deliberate thing.

I'd say play both series but Resistance is easily the better series, the first game is old-school and hard as nails and I can't recommend it enough, especially since couch co-op, the multiplayer is good too if anybody still plays it. The 2nd is a bit of a series low point, more a military shooter than anything else but it's enjoyable. Resistance 3 is up there with InFamous 2 as one of the best games on the PS3, it's a must have if you have the system, the story is great and highly replayable, the co-op is good fun, the multiplayer is great too.

Killzone try pick up the trilogy pack, the first one has more value as a comedic look back at the early 2000's and has a pretty solid FPS going on underneath a chessy, awful story (in a so bad it's good way), the second is kind of WW2 in space but it's very satisfying to play if you can get past it not bein g feathery light. The third is dumb, but enjoyable none-the-less, a bit light for my tastes but it's a much more varied game than the 2nd, even though the vehicle bits kinda suck. Multiplayer is still thriving in 2 AND 3, 2 is a bit clusterfucky with rockets and shit though.

I recommend both but I'd say Resistance is the better series, by a considerable margin.

Another edit, there are demos on the PS Store for Killzone 2 and 3, Killzone 3 multiplayer is free to play until a certain rank, and there are demos for Resistance 1 and 3. Try them before you buy.

I would go with Resistance hands down. I've played all three major games from both series, and Resistance was so much better for me. Killzone I found boring, uninspired, and frankly not what was advertised. In the advertisements for each game, they always made it seem like you'd be part of a huge army battling another huge army. Instead, each Killzone game quickly becomes "You verse the huge army...with maybe one or two unkillable and therefore totally useless squadmates." I also didn't care for the story, something that will kill a game for me quicker than bad controls.

Resistance though, you were part of huge battles. Granted, you were often the only one left standing by the time they were finished, but it was still a blast. Resistance 3 dropped the ball on this, but the addition of full campaign co op made up for it. I loved the story too, or at least the mystery hidden just beneath the surface. All throughout the games it's hinted that something bigger is going on. Sadly, Insomniac has decided to no longer do the series, so I'm worried we'll never get all the answers. The gameplay also felt more enjoyable and fun. Nothing like being able to carry a squad's worth of weapons on your back again.

I would would start with Resistance and go for the first game.

Killzone is a great series but pretty much par for the course in terms of military shooter themes. Resistance is more divers in locals and weaponry.

I would start with the first game of either series because of story really.

If you`re into crazy alien weapons and like gore start with Resistance.
Killzone is a bit like CoD in space but the enemies have way more brain and it`s prettier. What i personally like about Killzone is the gameplay. It actually captures the feel of being a marine with heavy gear (especially KZ2).
Make sure you try out both series.

Discounting the bag of bollocks that was Resistance 2, I prefer the Resistance series, it's just generally more exciting and imaginative.

The Killzone games are pretty cool but I find them a chore to play because enemies occasionally seem to span forever and everything is so damn dark it's difficult to distinguish enemies by anything other than their red eyes.

Given that you can pick up most of the games from either series for under twenty quid now, though, I'd recommend you try them both out.

What do people think about skipping to Resistance 3? Because whilst there are good spots, I feel like Resistance 1 is flawed enough that it's a bit more niche than later on. But then maybe it'd be good to start the story in the right place
